Mike Robles here to bring you the best of the best (this week). As I continue my quest of searching the corners of the Internet, I am always amazed at what I find. I also couldn’t do it without your help, so I’d like to say, “Thank you,” to everyone who tweets at me when they find awesome stuff. Let’s look at our treasures!
The Makings of a Mizzet
Villainous Lair Gaming in San Diego, CA has been receiving a lot of attention. The store looks awesome, they encourage cosplay, and for Dragon’s Maze, they built a Niz-Mizzet. The Facebook album will show you how this Dracogenius was created, step by step. It’s fantastic to see stores adding unique culture into their environments. Displays like this help stores stand out and make events even more memorable. This additional effort encourages other stores to do the same, and it keeps players coming back to see what the store will do next. Keep up the good work, Villainous Lair! Next time I’m back in L.A., I might have to hop on the 5 and head down to San Diego to visit!
Nivix Guildmage
While browsing through Tumblr, I came across this image. This hand-painted piece of art is already starting to look beautiful. The Nivix Guildmage is among the most recognizable figures from the Return to Ravnica block, and here he is in full watercolor glory. I can’t wait to see what the finished image will look like.
Decorating the Director’s Office
Working in office environments can be fun—especially when you have coworkers who can take a joke. This Imgur user said his director teased him about playing Magic. So, what better way to retaliate than to completely decorate the office in Magic cards! There is no safe place to hide in this office. They filled the fridge with delicious cards, jammed the copier full, and made a nice desktop wallpaper to ensure that the love for Magic is understood. Be sure to check out the entire album to see just how much of the office is covered! Take note future coworkers: If you make fun of me for playing Magic, I’m doing something like this.
This Play Mat Is Nuts
Like Mark Purvis, I am a squirrel fan. I featured Liz last week—with her awesome Futurama play mat—and this week, she’s at it again. Seriously, this play mat is freaking adorable. It’s going to be part of a charity tournament and silent auction called Cards Against Cancer in August. The fundraiser has gathered some very talented Magic: The Gathering artists and has (in previous years) raised over $4,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. This play mat is a must-have for any squirrel fan, and if I could, I would bid on it. To learn more about Cards Against Cancer and how to bid on this play mat, follow this link.
What to Do
You are looking at every booster pack since Limited Edition Beta. This photo came with the caption, “He’s trying to decide what to do.” Allow me to offer some suggestions:
What Mike Robles Would Do with All Those Packs:
- MEGA DRAFT
- MEGA SEALED
- Tournament with those packs as prizes
- Give them to Mike Robles
- Fill a swimming pool and dive in Scrooge McDuck style
- Have the most intense Iron Man battles ever
- Donate to the Lady Planeswalkers Society
- MEGA-BLOCK DRAFTS
So, if you’re reading, guy who doesn’t know what to do with those packs, I hope my list helped. Seriously, though . . . I’ll take those old packs.
Slivers Versus Praetors
Last week, we saw the initial reaction to the new Slivers. They were met with mixed reviews and criticism for everything from their abilities to their looks. Justin Treadway brings forth this conspiracy theory that the new Slivers are based on the Praetors from New Phyrexia. This made me think back to the Secret Invasion that Marvel comics had back in 2008. The Skrulls had secretly replaced many Marvel superheroes over the course of years before finishing with a full-on assault on Earth. My thoughts are, “What if the New Phyrexians had been Slivers all along?” Think about it: Slivers are a hive mind and seem to adapt to whatever plane they’re on. What’s to say they didn’t engage the Phyrexians years ago and take over? This would cause the Phyrexians and Slivers to unite. The Phyrexians need a new place to live, and the Slivers want to keep adapting. It’s a deadly match made in heaven. Let me know what you think about this whole Praetors-and-Slivers theory in the comments below.

Over the course of Pro Tour: Dragon’s Maze, some folks on Twitter were having fun with commentator Marshall Sutcliffe. The goal was to see who can capture the most derpy screenshot of Marshall. A ton of the tweets that came through made me burst out laughing. The one listed was among the first to start this hunt, and it still cracks me up.

That ends another week of treasure hunting for me! As always, be sure to keep me informed when you see awesome cosplay, Magic memes, or anything awesome that’s Magic-related. I’ll see you next week with a fresh batch of treasures. Until then, this is Mike Robles saying:
