Checking Out Fresh Decks from Karlov Manor Standard

Reddit

Hello everyone. Now that Murders at Karlov Manor has officially been released, it's time to begin looking at decks featuring these great new cards. Let's get started.

Boros Convoke

We'll start this week by taking a look at a deck in my favorite two-color combination. This is the first deck I plan on trying out. Let's take a look at the deck.

Knight-Errant of Eos
Even though there's only one creature in this deck that actually has a convoke ability, the value you get from doing this is very important. By using your creatures to pay for the mana value of Knight-Errant of Eos, you can get up to two five mana value creatures from your deck into your hand. Since the mana value of most creatures in this deck is three or less, you won't often need to convoke with more than that, but it can be nice to cast Knight-Errant of Eos without having to tap any mana to do so.

While Knight-Errant of Eos is the only creature in this deck with convoke, there is another creature that can use your other creatures to get better. Of course, that creature is Warden of the Inner Sky. By tapping three creatures you control, you can place a +1/+1 counter on Warden of the Inner Sky. While this can only be done at any time you could cast a sorcery, it does allow you to tap a creature for this effect on the turn that creature entered play, since the ability doesn't have the tap symbol.

Orzhov Tokens

The next deck I have for you is a White/Black deck that benefits from having a lot of creature tokens in play. Let's take a look at the deck.

Kaya, Spirits' Justice
Kaya, Spirits' Justice has the ability to create a 1/1 Spirit creature token with flying when you activate her +1 loyalty ability. You can later exile that Spirit creature token, or any other creature you have in play, to exile a creature your opponent controls, by activating Kaya's -2 loyalty ability. By exiling your cheap token creatures, you can quickly decimate your opponent's defenses.

To help ensure that you are able to create a lot of creature tokens, this deck has a couple of creatures that allow you to create multiple copies of creature tokens. Mondrak, Glory Dominus creates twice the number of creature tokens you would normally create, while Ojer Taq, Deepest Foundation // Temple of Civilization creates three times the number of tokens. It gets really silly when both of these legendary creatures are in play, as you'll then create six times the number of tokens you would otherwise create. That's great for you, and terrible for your opponent.

Grixis Assassins

The next deck I have for you features one of my favorite cards from Murders at Markov Manner, Massacre Girl, Known Killer. Let's check it out.

Massacre Girl, Known Killer
Massacre Girl, Known Killer takes me back to an old set called Shadowmoor. In this set, some creatures had a keyword that placed -1/-1 counters on your opponent's creatures when they were dealt damage. That keyword is called wither, and it's very punishing. Few things feel worse than being able to chump block your opponent's creatures, and seeing your own creatures slowly die in the process. I'm a big fan of wither, so I'm looking forward to playing Massacre Girl, Known Killer.

This deck also includes another thing I love to do, which is use my opponent's card to defeat them with. Etrata, Deadly Fugitive does this by letting you cloak the top card of your opponent's library whenever an Assassin you control deals damage to your opponent. Etrata provides you with the means of turning those cloaked creatures face up, as well as the ability to cast a cloaked noncreature card without paying its mana cost. Between seeing their creatures slowly wither away and being beaten by their own deck, your opponent is sure to suffer when playing against this deck.

Jeskai Helix Control

The final deck I have for you this week features a great reprint from Ravnica: City of Guilds, Lightning Helix. Let's take a look at the deck.

Lightning Helix

While I'm not one to usually offer advice on how to beat aggressive Red decks, this deck has a few cards that can help shore up this matchup. Lightning Helix is one of those cards. For only two mana, you'll deal three damage to any target, while also gaining three points of life. Take out your opponent's threat while simultaneously beefing up your life total. It's a win-win proposition.

Ill-Timed Explosion is another card that you can use to help stop an aggressive deck. This sorcery allows you to draw two cards. You'll then have to discard two cards, and you'll deal damage to each creature equal to the highest mana value of those discarded cards. By using this in conjunction with other mass removal spells, such as Farewell and Sunfall, you'll be able to keep your opponent's side of the battlefield from any major threats.

Wrapping Up

Murders at Karlov Manor offers a ton of new cards that are sure to shake things up during the next few months. These decks are literally just scratching the surface. I'm looking forward to seeing what new decks are created over the next few weeks, and seeing what decks become the cream of the crop.

What do you think of these decks? Feel free to share this article with your friends anywhere on social media. And be sure to join me here again next week as I continue my search for innovative decks in Standard. I'll see you then!
