Hello everyone. I'm back, once again, bringing you a variety of decks that you can play at a local Standard event near you or just for fun against your friends. I've got three different decks this week in all of the colors of the mana, so hopefully, even if there's a color you're not fond of playing, I'll have a deck for you to try out. Let's get started.
Big Red Burn
What better place to start than with a mono-colored deck in my favorite color, Red. While many Red decks focus on small, hasty creatures, this deck goes big with spells that will burn your opponent's life total away. Let's take a look at the deck.
Big Red Burn | MAT Standard | Redd_Cat_MTG, aetherhub.com user
- Planeswalkers (7)
- 1 Jaya, Fiery Negotiator
- 3 Chandra, Dressed to Kill
- 3 Chandra, Hope's Beacon
- Instants (18)
- 1 Abrade
- 1 Invoke Calamity
- 2 Big Score
- 2 Flame-Blessed Bolt
- 2 Stoke the Flames
- 2 Volcanic Spite
- 4 Lightning Strike
- 4 Play with Fire
- Sorceries (9)
- 2 Ral's Reinforcements
- 3 Brotherhood's End
- 4 Burn Down the House
- Artifacts (1)

- Lands (25)
- 22 Mountain
- 1 Mirrex
- 2 Sokenzan, Crucible of Defiance
Burn spell, after burn spell, after burn spell. That's what this deck is hoping to accomplish. And it has a great variety of burn spells you can employ. Some, like Volcanic Spite and Flame-Blessed Bolt, can only target your opponent's permanents on the battlefield. Others can be used directly against your opponent, like Lightning Strike and Stoke the Flames. As a great finisher, you can cast Invoke Calamity to cast a pair of these burn spells from your graveyard, hopefully as a way of finishing off your opponent's life total.
While there are no creature spells in this deck, there are a few ways this deck has of creating creatures. Ral's Reinforcements creates a pair of 1/1 Elemental creature tokens. Burn Down the House can be used to create a trio of 1/1 Demon creature tokens that are as deadly in death as they are while on the battlefield. Jaya, Fiery Negotiator can create 1/1 Monk creature tokens that have prowess. Even the nonbasic lands in this deck can create creature tokens.
In addition to the damage you'll cause with your burn spells, this deck has three terrific planeswalkers that can bring the pain as well. Chandra, Dressed to Kill has a +1 loyalty ability that deals one point of damage while also providing you with a Red mana you can use. You can use the -X loyalty of Chandra, Hope's Beacon to deal direct damage to up to two targets. Finally, while Jaya, Fiery Negotiator will mostly be used to create Monk tokens, she does have a -8 loyalty ability that creates an emblem that copies instant and sorcery spells that you cast, allowing you to deal twice the amount of damage with them.
Golgari Scavengers
Next, I have a Green/Black deck that showcases a pair of Phyrexian reprints that show that they still have what it takes to compete in Standard. Let's check it out.
Golgari Scavengers | MAT Standard | powrdragn, aetherhub.com user
- Creatures (19)
- 2 Sheoldred // The True Scriptures
- 2 Tenacious Underdog
- 3 Glissa Sunslayer
- 3 Graveyard Trespasser // Graveyard Glutton
- 3 Phyrexian Obliterator
- 3 Sheoldred, the Apocalypse
- 3 Urborg Scavengers
- Instants (11)
- 2 Cut Down
- 3 Go for the Throat
- 3 Sheoldred's Edict
- 3 Tear Asunder
- Sorceries (5)
- 2 Gix's Command
- 3 Bushwhack
- Enchantments (2)
- 2 Phyrexian Arena
- Lands (24)
- 1 Forest
- 12 Swamp
- 1 Takenuma, Abandoned Mire
- 2 Boseiju, Who Endures
- 4 Deathcap Glade
- 4 Llanowar Wastes
While the mana needed to cast Phyrexian Obliterator can be oppressive, the benefits it brings cannot be denied. Getting a 5/5 creature with trample for only four mana is pretty good. When you add in the fact that any damage done to Phyrexian Obliterator causes the damaging player to sacrifice their own permanents, you have an incredibly resilient creature that can end games quickly.
This deck also includes a couple of copies of Phyrexian Arena. at the cost of one point of life, you'll end up drawing two cards during your turn, giving you quite an advantage. Hitting your land drops should be easier, and so should finding the cards you need. To help mitigate the life loss this card requires, you can exile creatures when Graveyard Trespasser // Graveyard Glutton enters play or attacks. Additionally, Sheoldred, the Apocalypse can also give you some life points.
The 'Scavengers' in the name of this deck refers to Urborg Scavengers. This little 2/2 Spirit will start exiling cards from any graveyard when it enters the battlefield. It also exiles cards from graveyards when it attacks. Doing this increases Urborg Scavengers's size by adding a +1/+1 counter to it, plus it will be able to gain a variety of keywords based on the keywords on the cards it has exiled. With just a turn or two, it can quickly become a threat that must be answered or the game will be over.
Jeskai Prowess Monks
The final deck I have for you is a tri-colored deck that shows the power that Narset has, even without her planeswalker spark. Let's take a look at it.
Jeskai Prowess Monks | MAT Standard | MtgMalone, aetherhub.com user
- Creatures (15)
- 3 Balmor, Battlemage Captain
- 3 Monastery Mentor
- 3 Monastery Swiftspear
- 3 Narset, Enlightened Exile
- 3 Third Path Iconoclast
- Instants (21)
- 2 Stoke the Flames
- 2 Surge of Salvation
- 3 Fading Hope
- 3 Make Disappear
- 3 Spell Pierce
- 4 Lightning Strike
- 4 Play with Fire
- Battles (3)
- 3 Invasion of Gobakhan // Lightshield Array
Certain decks will stand no chance against Narset, Enlightened Exile. With her ability that allows you to exile and cast a copy of a noncreature, nonland card with a mana value equal to or less than Narset's power from any graveyard when she attacks, you might be able to finish off your opponent with their own spell. Even if this isn't possible, this deck includes a ton of instant spells for you to cast a second time.
Most often, you'll want to use Narset's ability to cast a copy of the burn spells in this deck. Play with Fire, Lightning Strike, and Stoke the Flames can all hit any target, making them perfect to help reduce your opponent's life total as quickly as possible. Alternatively, Surge of Salvation is a great spell to cast multiple times during the battle. It provides hexproof to you and your permanents, and is a color hoser against Red and Black decks.
One thing I didn't mention about Narset, Enlightened Exile earlier is that she also provides prowess to all of your creatures, including herself. Since a creature can have multiple instances of prowess that will each trigger separately, that makes creatures like Monastery Swiftspear and Monastery Mentor doubly effective. Getting a +1/+1 bonus twice for every noncreature spell that you cast can make these Human Monks especially adept at finishing off your opponent in record time.
Wrapping Up
Two of these decks really sing to me, but the other deck looks very appealing as well. Each of these decks has something within it that I love when playing Magic. Whether you enjoy flashy burn spells, causing your opponent to sacrifice their own permanents, or attacking with really big creatures, I think you're likely to find something to enjoy in this week's decks.
What do you think of these decks? Feel free to share this article with your friends anywhere on social media. And be sure to join me here again next week as I continue my search for innovative decks in Standard. I'll see you then!
