Drafting with Big Nass, RGD #3

Reddit

Welcome back for another retro Draft here at Drafting with Big Nass. I’m forgoing my beloved R/U/G Bloodgraft to showcase another archetype. Read on to find out what it is!

As always, text recap follows the video links.

Pack 1, Pick 1:

My Pick:

There are few cards that would convince me to commit to a guild right away pack one, but Sunforger is definitely one of them. Even without an instant to tutor for, the +4/+0 bonus is substantial, especially when combined with trample or double strike. Going into Boros pack one leaves blue and black as the best options for a third color—either one gives us a guild to draft in packs two and three.

Pack 1, Pick 2:

My Pick:

Peel from Reality is very solid, but so is the Thundersong Trumpeter, and I’d rather stick to Boros for now.

Pack 1, Pick 3:

My Pick:

Pack 1, Pick 4:

My Pick:

Both Selesnya Evangel and Overwhelm are great, but going into green here means pack three is mostly dead. I’m not willing to accept that tradeoff, so I’ll have to be content with a much worse Oathsworn Giant.

Pack 1, Pick 5:

My Pick:

Jeeez! That’s a late Civic Wayfinder. For the reasons stated above, I’m not willing to take it, but I’d have a pretty sick green deck if I didn’t open Sunforger.

Pack 1, Pick 6:

My Pick:

Speaking of Sunforger, it goes pretty well with Boros Swiftblade. OH GG.

Pack 1, Pick 7:

My Pick:

Flickerform can be good sometimes I guess, but I’d rather go with good old reliable Screeching Griffin. He always attacks for at least 2. Always.

Pack 1, Pick 8:

My Pick:

Sweet, now any creature holding a Sunforger is a gigantic threat—more so than usual.

Pack 1, Pick 9:

Pack 1, Pick 15:

Pack 2, Pick 1:

My Pick:

Well, that was an easy decision. I need to decide between Izzet and Orzhov this pack, and it’s looking like the latter unless my neighbor to the right has strong feelings to the contrary.

Pack 2, Pick 2:

My Pick:

This plus Sunforger equals Baneslayer Angel . . . or something.

Pack 2, Pick 3:

My Pick:

Okay, I guess I have to actually decide now. Electrolyze is insane, but I’m not sure how much or if it’s better than Teysa, Orzhov Scion. This pick is probably wrong, but as I’ve said before, I’m a sucker for rares. I also don’t get to draft Orzhov all that often and would really like to cast some Blind Hunters.

Pack 2, Pick 4:

My Pick:

Okay, I’m pretty sure pick-four Sword of the Paruns should happen never.

Pack 2, Pick 5:

My Pick:

Here’s some much needed mana fixing.

Now there’s a pretty exciting target for my Sunforger.

Pack 3, Pick 2:

My Pick:

While I don’t expect to be hellbent all that often, it’s still a 4-mana 2/2 flyer.

Here’s where we ended up:

The mana base is obviously really sketchy, but there are some powerful cards. Both Equipment cards were great, and I even got to live the dream with Sunforger on Boros Swiftblade.

Hope you guys enjoyed the Draft. I have one more recorded, so tune in next week for Return to Retro Drafts.

Until next time,
