Bloomburrow Previews Come to a Close!

Reddit

This week has seen the final batch of Bloomburrow previews get revealed and wow has there been a lot of cuteness overload happening here! Not only have we gotten the rest of the main set, but there's also been everything from typical Commander precons and Special Guests to the all new fancy Imagine: Courageous Critters cards. If you're a fan of adorable animals, then this set has it in spades, and I think it's pretty safe to say there's a little something for everyone here in all the best ways! Let's spend a little time looking at a couple highlights from throughout the week as I recap the second - and last - week of Bloomburrow previews!

Final Main Set Sweetness

Stormsplitter

Players freaked out a little when they saw the new Ral, Crackling Wit for referencing Storm on a Standard legal card once again. This past week, however, saw the reveal of another Storm-esque card in the form of the aptly named Stormsplitter. The more cheap instants and sorceries you can cast, the more copies of this card you'll exponentially see hit the table, allowing it to get really nutty in spellslinger games.

Fabled Passage
Fountainport

One interesting element with Bloomburrow is the distinct lack of a dual land cycle. This is particularly notable due to the rotation of the Midnight Hunt and Crimson Vow slow lands that is happening with this set entering Standard. Still, despite the lack of fresh duals, there's still a couple of really strong lands. Fabled Passage is an awesome reprint that will no doubt see plenty of play and Fountainport provides a whole host of awesome effects all in one neat little package.

Dragonhawk, Fate's Tempest

One final big highlight was seeing Dragonhawk, Fate's Tempest. When the card's art first showed up in the Bloomburrow story, players immediately recognized it as a Tarkir dragon - particularly of the Kolaghan variety - turned into a bird. The question then became was this dragon merely one of Kolaghan's brood or actually Kolaghan herself? It's going to be interesting to see where this story element goes considering the current arc is known as the Dragonstorm arc and will close out on Tarkir next year.

Commander Goodies Revealed

Murmuration
Jacked Rabbit

Bloomburrow as a whole has been a great space for adorably humorous elements, and that's showing up in spades with the Commander decks. Murmuration is a sort of recurring Crow Storm effect in black border, which is bound to lead to tons of jokes at any table. Jacked Rabbit also drew immediate attention primarily due to the absolute absurdity of how the card looks along with its aptly titled name.

Mr. Foxglove

Many of the backup commanders were also big standouts, but the one that got players talking immediately was clearly Mr. Foxglove. Not only is this one of the only foxes that we see in the actual set, but the card itself provides some really stellar abilities. If your opponent has more cards than you, you can draw a little extra, and if you don't draw anything you get a free creature! A wonderfully sly nod to Robin Hood in all the right ways.

Scurry of Squirrels

Interestingly one thing players noted the squirrels deck seemed to be lacking in was, well...new squirrel cards! Main Commanders aside, players got one actual squirrel card in the form of Scurry of Squirrels (Rootcast Apprenticeship doesn't count). Not only does it provide one squirrel, but a whole bevy of them thanks to the double myriad effect on the card! That's a ton of little critters in one small package!

Sweet New Reprint Treatments

One of the big talking points on the reprint front this time around is the Imagine: Courageous Critters subset! Most of these cards are found only in collector boosters, but provide really fun takes on many classic cards in the process. Some are fairly simple, like Bloomburrow-styled iterations of Birds of Paradise and The Gitrog Monster, while others take an entirely different approach. I doubt anyone expected a Great Deku Tree-esque Karn, the Great Creator, but it shows up here! Four planeswalkers also make their appearances in the various commander decks with Elspeth, Sun's Champion being one of the more notable standouts.

The Special Guests are particularly awesome this time around! While some definitely seem a touch on the lower end with cards like Secluded Courtyard and Frogmite in the mix, many of the others are super awesome. Ledger Shredder is a tremendously popular Constructed staple and Sylvan Tutor is getting its first non-promo reprint ever here. Players talked extensively about Toski as well, being anthropomorphized to look very much like a viking - fitting of his Kaldheim heritage.

Helm of the Host
Tendershoot Dryad

Not only are there some incredible new designs in the precons, but there's also some real heat in the reprints that can be found in the Commander decks as well! Just looking at the Squirreled Away precon, you can see a bunch of cards like Saw in Half, Maelstrom Pulse, Skullclamp, Swarmyard, and more getting reprinted! Other decks see powerful cards like Helm of the Host, Tendershoot Dryad, and Kalonian Hydra in them - all a great way to jumpstart any collection!
