We are now well into the release of Ursula's Return and oh boy, do we have some fantastic cards to shake things up a bit. Today, we'll take a look at what new Amethyst cards are available and ways you can use them in your next deck.
Strong Considerations
We finally get to talk about Bruno now that he and the rest of the Madrigals have debuted in Ursula's Return! Let's talk about his strongest version, Undetected Uncle. At 5 ink and inkable, Bruno brings a fun ability to the field called You Just Have To See It, which allows you to exert him and name a card. You then look at the top of your deck and see if it's the named card. If you are correct, you put it in your hand AND gain 3 lore. Now, if you're playing a ton of cards with the same name, such as Magic Broom or Dalmatian Puppy, the odds of you calling the right card are pretty good. However, we do have cards such as Ursula's Cauldron and The Boss is On a Roll to also help us view and stack the top of the deck with the right cards to call. With it having Evasive, I can easily see this used in a combo-style deck for sure.
Camilo Madrigal - Prankster is a fantastic card that allows Camilo to be dynamic and add value where you need it. During sealed play at the Disney Lorcana Challenge, I always made sure to try and use one or two copies for this very reason. With 5 Willpower, he does have some staying power for multiple challenges, whether he's on the offensive or defensive. Having two lore for questing allows him to put pressure on as soon as turn five if you have no threats on the opponent's board as well.
Elsa - Storm Chaser was another character that proved itself in Limited, but I can see it's utility in Constructed as well. Rush is a keyword that will always catch you by surprise, so having the ability to not only grant Rush but also Challenger +2 might make your opponent think twice before leaving themselves vulnerable. Although it's un-inkable, don't discount her. She opens up the possibility of shifting Elsa - Spirit of Winter, granting a really solid tempo play as soon as turn six.
We have our third Madrigal coming in hot, with Isabela Madrigal - Golden Child. With the ability Ladies First, you are questing for 4 each turn, but preventing the other characters from questing. Usually this would be a detriment, but If you're using Bruno Madrigal - Undetected Uncle's ability, that will net you more lore than simply questing with him. You also have a support location Casa Madrigal - Casita to net you some passive lore as well. This allows you to be a bit more creative when it comes to activating character abilities, bouncing, or challenging opponent's characters while still maintaining a strong lore tempo against your opponent.
Peter Pan - Shadow Finder is an excellent card to follow up on Peter Pan's Shadow. Flavor-wise, the cards complement each other by granting all Evasive characters with Rush, and All Rush characters with Evasive. This allows for some convenient trades while potentially preventing leaving your characters vulnerable thanks to Evasive. With as strong as this character is, it also makes it un-inkable which is a fair trade off.
The showcase character of the set, Ursula - Sea Witch Queen, is a 7 cost inkable character that can quest for 3 lore. With solid stats of 4 strength and 7 willpower, she's going to be difficult to deal with. First of all, you can shift her in for 5 ink, allowing you to use her right away as she enters play. If you've quested with her, she has an ability called Now I Am The Ruler, which allows you to exert a chosen character. This can open up an opposing character for a valuable trade in your favor when challenging. Her last ability, You'll Listen To Me, is kind of a double edged sword since it prevents all characters from singing songs. This forces you to deal with her before singing songs or outright paying for the song in ink which can really mess up your tempo. Overall, I'm happy to see her get Legendary, Enchanted, and soon to be Store Championship versions of her card to really show that she means business!
Magic Broom lovers rejoice! In addition to getting additional Magic Broom characters this set, we have some solid support for a tribal Magic Broom deck. Yen Sid - Powerful Sorcerer costs 2 ink and being inkable makes this pretty much an auto include in any broom deck. The card replaces itself as long as you have a Magic Broom in play and has the ability to quest for up to 3 lore per turn as long as you have 2 or more brooms in play. Being such a cheap cost means you can leverage some synergy with bounce characters, such as Madam Mim - Snake and Madam Mim - Fox to replay him and keep him safe from challenging while continuing to draw with him. If you're looking for a fun thematic deck outside of the Madrigal family deck, this would be the one to play.
Conclusion
There you have it. We've gone over some of the top choices for Amethyst players to consider building with. Does the Madrigal family seem like a fun deck to play with these really strong cards, or how about Magic Brooms? The possibilities are endless, and I truly can't wait to see what's going to be brewed in this set. Share your lists with me on Twitter/X@_EmeraldWeapon_
