Flooding from North Sea storms and overflowing rivers constantly endanger the Netherlands. With one quarter of its land reclaimed from the sea - or below sea level - the Dutch have long depended on dikes and wind-powered pumps (windmills) to keep them safe. Now, as their population expands with the dawn of the Industrial Age, it is up to you to build the needed canals, dams, and delta works to protect them from the rising tide.
In Pandemic: Rising Tide, you and your fellow players are Dutch civil officials trying to keep the ever-encroaching water at bay. Can you control the water flow long enough to build the modern hydraulic structures that will help you defend against the flood? Work together to keep your head about the water in Pandemic: Rising Tide!
Band Together
To tackle the massive flooding problem, you'll need to enlist the help of a diverse and elite group of specialists. Players can choose one of seven unique roles to inhabit in a game of Pandemic: Rising Tide, and each has a particular strength that will help the team in their daunting task.
Carpenter
Maintaining the dikes and pumping stations that get water out and keep it out is an important job, and the Carpenter does it better than anyone else. Use an action to build a pumping station in a region without discarding a region card, or you may use the Build Dike action in a region that contains 1 or more water cubes (when you ordinarily wouldn't be able to). Put your carpentry skills to the test and embrace the role of water management at the macro level!
Director
Every large project requires someone with a bird's eye view to help keep things running smoothly. The Director is up to the task. With this role, you may move any player's pawn to a region containing 1 or more water cubes. Need to get the Carpenter to a badly flooded region? The Director can do it in a flash and keep things moving along!
Hydraulic Engineer
The Carpenter is an important role, but sometimes you need the raw efficiency of the Hydraulic Engineer to put up strong dikes quickly. The engineer gets to build an additional dike with the Build Dike action, but the region can't contain any water cubes. So, clear the water out and let the Hydraulic Engineer bolster the region from future flooding!
Port Master
Mobility is key when a flood can wreak havoc on the other side of the board when you least expect it. Thank goodness you have the Port Master to help you get around! The Port Master can use an action to build a Port in their region without discarding a card, or they can move to any region if they're currently in a region with a Port. The Port Master can hit the scene in the blink of an eye, ready to help out however they can!
Pump Operator
When you're up to your neck in water and there's no reprieve in sight, look no further than the Pump Operator! Using their expertise, the operator can remove water from adjacent regions as well as their own, removing water from multiple regions at a time, an invaluable skill to be sure.
Sanitation Engineer
Haste makes waste, but you won't have to worry about that when the Sanitation Engineer is around! Make use of their special ability to grab Region cards from the discard pile that match your current region. One man's trash is another man's treasure, and the Sanitation Engineer is buried in treasure!
Warehouse Manager
Logistics can be hell in times of crisis, but the Warehouse Manager has you covered on that front! If they're in a region with a port, the Warehouse Manager can give a region card from their hand to anyone else, no restrictions!
A Different Challenge
After playing the game a few times, maybe you'll be up for a different sort of challenge. Try out the Objectives Cards for a fresh take on Pandemic: Rising Tide's gameplay! Rather than racing to build the four Hydraulic Structures to win the game, the Objective Cards will introduce four or more new objectives (depending on what level of challenge you want) and could possibly add the Population cubes to the game, introducing an additional dimension of management to an already hectic board.
