It's part of a modern game genre that has come to be called "collectible card games" or "trading card games" (abbreviated as "CCGs" or "TCGs" respectively). Some may think that Magic is a copycat of Pokemon or other card-based game, but Magic: the Gathering is the oldest of these style of games. It has watched many imitators come and go, and only Magic: The Gathering has held true staying power within the industry.
