Hello! I hope your day is going strongly well!
Well, you know it. War of the Spark is almost upon us. As we've seen from spoilers and teasers, this is going to be a set that is rife with planeswalkers. So. Many. Planeswalkers.
So let's get ready! What cards work well with 'walkers? What are the best cards to lean into? What should we be looking at for abusing a giant slate of Standard legal planeswalkers? Great questions for all!!!! Let's look and see!
Honorable Mention #1. Heart of Kiran
What makes the Heart of Kiran so much fun is that you can just pull off a loyalty counter from one of your planeswalkers in order to crew it up. Because it has both vigilance and flying, it's perfect to help protect your team. Not only can it swing but it can also block nicely too and creates a decent 'walker protecting barrier. I love it in Commander in mostly creature less builds that feature planeswalkers and sweeping removal for dorks with few creatures in there. Heart of Kiran is a good adjunct to your Walkers of the Planes! Enjoy it!
Honorable Mention #2 - Obliterate
The only permanent this uncounterable majesty used to skip past was enchantments. But now? Don't forget that it'll skip past planeswalkers as well. When you have a few planeswalkers out after a massive sweeping spell like this, you are much more likely to win the game, right? Right! I'd much rather have a few planeswalkers out post Obliterate than a few enchantments. No one has lands and thus the mana to answer your 'walkers off.
10. Primevals' Glorious Rebirth
Hello folks. For those not following how this works in the back, allow me to help out! This card does not read, "Return all legendary creatures." Instead you recur any legendary permanent. Why does that matter? 'Cause all planeswalkers all legendary! Bring them all back for another run of glory for your cause! What keeps this back at #10 instead of hitting a lot higher is that legendary sorcery part. You can only cast this if you control one legendary dork or 'walker. But then you can reign over your foes!
9. The Non-Dominaria Oaths
I ordered them from my top (Jace) to my least favorite (Chandra). These Oaths all work well with your planeswalkers, right? I really enjoy the deep scry of Jace followed by the additional loyalty counter of Gideon's Oath. The Oaths of Nissa and Ajani are both solid at dropping your future planeswalkers, so they have a solid ability here. Love them and use them!
8. Djeru, With Eyes Open
Consider a Tutor Effect like Call the Gatewatch. You search your library for a planeswalkers, put it into your hand, and then move on. There is no card advantage. There are not further effects. And yet? It's good card with a strong effect that lots use. But Djeru is different. Djeru arrives. And then you have a dork out in addition to a tutored planeswalker. Plus, while you are controlling Djeru, then your 'walkers won't take as much damage. There is card advantage here, and the potential for more. There is more synergy here. Shout out to Thalia's Lancers, by the by who tutor for any legendary card on arrival.
7. Rings of Brighthearth
Forking the activation of your 'walkers for a humble two mana a pop is downright sexy-keen-cool. Any deck can use and abuse it. It's castable early and useful later. It can also duplicate a lot of stuff that ain't planeswalkers as well. Land abilities like Maze of Ith suggest themselves to me. Enjoy your Rings!
6. Captain Sisay
Forget one-time tutors like Thalia's Lancers if you run Captain Sisay! Tap her, search for any legendary card, which includes all planeswalkers and then put that bad boy in your hand. Sisay doesn't even cost any mana to tap! You can drop what you tutored for immediately. She's awesome here.
5. The Chain Veil
Come on now! You know this thing would be making an appearance here somewhere, right? The Chain Veil is a perfect card to go along with any planeswalker deck. The life loss is minor, and the ability to get additional loyalty counters this turn is just strong. It works on every planeswalker you have. So it's triple-plus strong. Also, don't forget that it's legendary too, so cards that you lean into for your planeswalker love that care about legendary permanents, such as Captain Sisay above, will also fetch your Chain Veil from your deck as well.
4. Oath of Teferi
This is better than The Chain Veil because you won't have to burn yourself for damage if there are no dorks out, and it requires no mana to use. You can use it's free blink to reload the counters on a planeswalker as well! However, because it's in two colors, it is harder to add to certain decks. But it's good and strong and legendary, cough Captain Sisay, cough. Enjoy your Teferi Fun Times!
3. Arena Rector
As we have mentioned above, there are some Tutor effects that will search your library for a nifty planeswalker and toss it in your hand. Getting the right 'walker for the right situation is important to winning the game. But what makes the Rector so much better is that you just toss the 'walker out onto the battlefield. You can drop something that you can't cast yet, such as Ugin, the Spirit Dragon. You can also grab a key 'walker such as Sarkhan Unbroken who is both awesome and may require the wrong colors and could not otherwise be cast right now. Arena Rector is Arena Awesome!
2. Doubling Season
After The Chain Veil and Oath of Teferi, this was a card you knew would be here from the title of the article, right? Right! I rate this as the second best card for planeswalkers. Why? Because they arrive with double the loyalty counters on them. That means that you can usually ultimate your 'walkers as soon as they arrive, and many of them are game-ending!
Here are five examples of game-winning ultimates you can launch the turn they arrive with a Doubling Season under your control:
From drawing a ton of cards to gaining 100 life and more, all of these dorks create game-winning states that are hard to answer. Doubling Season is nasty!
1. Mirror Gallery
Hello folks! Mirror Gallery is, by FAR, the best card to abuse planeswalkers with! After changes were made to planeswalkers to make them all legendary, you cannot run more than one Jace Beleren or other cards due to their legendary status, not due to any special rules, an you could now have multiple Jaces like Jace, Memory Adapt and Jace Belerenas long as they were different Jaces. But with Mirror Gallery? You can now have out three copies of Karn Liberated or Ajani Goldmane. Four Teferi, Hero of Dominaria.
And there we are! Planeswalkers are awesome! They attack the game from a different angle. They bring a different sensibility to the game. Are you looking forward to Planeswalker fun times? I hope so!
