Hello Folks! I hope you are having a great day today!
Today I want to look at one of the newest legends in Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths.
Which one?
Why, Winota Ryder of course!
Now let's look at her rules, courtesy of the card release notes:
- You cannot self-use her ability as she is a Human. You'll need non-Humans to swing at people's faces.
- You trigger her ability once for each non-Human that swings! Therefore if you swing with a Solemn Simulacrum and a Burnished Hart, you'll get two triggers.
- Those dorks can attack any body or any planeswalker, they are not required to be the same one.
- Those new dorks won't have to worry about annoying things such as Propaganda.
And there you are!
Here's my goal for this EDH deck:
- Have a roughly even split of Humans and Non-Humans. We want to have our best chance of helping out the team!
- Run a large number of dorks. If I just have 30 dorks, with 15 of each needed, that means I only have a 15% chance of each card in a flip being a Human, and there will be games where I never see a non-Human. I have to maximize our numbers.
- Run cheap non-Humans I can drop prior to turn four so I can maximize the turn four tappery. My goal is to have two dorks out prior to casting Winota and then getting two swings and two dorks very early in the game.
- Run expensive Humans as reward.
Now let's build my deck!
One quick note before I do. I had already spent around 2 hours writing this article when I had a power outage and was unable to find it anywhere on my PC. I religiously hit the save button, no clues what happened to it. Therefore I am rewriting the entire thing, which is very, very frustrating.
Instead of doing my normal deep dive into my deck ideas, card images, and more, I am just giving you the basic framework and then calling it a deck, and this article will be shorter than normal. I'm sure you will understand!
Non-Humans
I want my non-Humans to be doing one of three things:
Grabbing that Mana
The first thing I want my non-Humans to do is to help with mana. This will include land fetchers like Pilgrim's Eye as well as mana tappers such as Iron Myr.
Destroying Things
The next place I dug into were dorks like Flametongue Kavu and Duergar Hedge-Mage that destroyed stuff. Ravenous Baboons? Goblin Ruinblaster? You get the idea!
Combat Savvy
The biggest cut of these are those dorks that are combat savvy, such as Legion Loyalist that comes down early and loves to swing at folks.
This section is very, very deep.
It includes folks that like to go wide such as Legion Warboss and Leonin Warleader. It also includes haste-makers such as Ogre Battledriver.
I also have some early beaters as well to help out with the early drops. Like the powerful (and forgotten) Stigma Lasher!
I finish with 27 non-Humans!
Humans: The Pay-off
Now what humans am I running?
The first are also combat-cognizant.
This is the biggest section, by far, and it includes dork like Hero of Oxid Ridge and Hero of Bladehold. In leaps Agrus Kos, Wojek Veteran as well as Tajic, Legion's Edge which will help the team. Syr Alin, the Lion's Claw? Benalish Marshal? They help the helping.
I also have two dorks from Commander 2020 that are entering the deck as well! I'm sure you can see why. Frontier Warmonger is jumping in from Ikoria as well.
Others
I also add in cards like Avalanche Riders and Thalia's Lancers that give me a solid slate of options for Humanizing the battlefield. Value like Godo, Bandit Warlord appears.
Ramp
I also have some Humans to ramp into that are either hard to cast (Haktos the Unscarred) or just pricey.
Homura, Human Ascendant is a brilliant ramp target!
I finish with 25 Humans and 53 dorks including leader!
Ready for the deck? Let's do it!
