One of the great abilities of Cubing is that you can have a variety of different flavors, mechanics, and more all running around and rocking your best coat of paint. There are Cubes that evoke flavor, fun archetypes like +1/+1 counters or have more than 1 of some cards that work well together. The whole thing is a lot of fun.
Well, I’ve decided to take on a major challenge. What would happen if every other card in my Cube was randomly chosen by Gatherer? Then I could add in a card here and there to flesh things out and make the Cube work. And I reserve the right to add the last 30 or 40 cards to make the various themes and needs work out.
We’re about halfway through this project. My goal at the end is to put this up on CubeTutor.com so you can actually draft it and see what you think.
Want to see where we are at so far? Excellent!

Most Cubes have built in archetypes you can draft if you want, as well as other fun stuff here and there. Most of my archetypes thus far have been handed to be by Gatherer. Here are the 15(ish) archetypes we need, and where I am right now:
Mono-White — Tokens, Tap and Kill your creatures
Mono-Blue — ETB triggers
Mono-Black — None
Mono-Green — None
Mono-Red — Taxing
— Tap and deal damage with pingers
— Colorless matters
— Sacrifice your lands and then bring them back
— Aggro
— Reanimation
— Elves
— Graveyards matters self- and other- milling.
— +1/+1 Counters
— Defender matters
— None
So the ones with none need to be fleshed out. And we moved some around a bit. +1/+1 counters started as Mono-Green before being picked up by archetype.
Are you ready for this thing?
Next? Next? Next?
Okay. It’s not the strongest card drawing spell in Blue, but hey, any cover in a blizzard is good, right? Right!
Ta-da! *Cough* Prismatic Omen *Cough* I think you can see that mad value. Next?
Feh. That doesn’t move me. But it’s in. What makes sense for it? How about another cheap flyer? Maybe for Boros Aggro?
2/1 flyer. Yay White. Okay Gatherer! Whatcha got?
Huh. All right, it’s in. But the slow draining of life on these auras can be pretty nasty. I’m going with a tempo-ish one too. Maybe. Would Errant Minion make sense here? Actually, if I had that Orzhov theme of tap/kill then Mind Whip would make sense. Paralyze? Parasitic Bond? Let’s do . . .
It’s the best of the lot I feel. All right G, Randomize me!
A big, giant, vanilla beater in Green. All right, let’s add in a spot of ramp to help me get to it. Ramp time!
And that’s a sold entry for us. Again, I have no issues with making my mana solid. Not broken, I rejected Grim Monolith, but solid. Gatherer, got anything to say?
Well that’s on line with where my is — creatures that tap to do damage. We even have Quicksilver Dagger for this. And I have an interesting way to tap into this . . .
Much like Seeker of Skybreak can be used to untap something valuable, this can to. Untap a Tim and hit again, untap an artifact, untap something using Hankyu, or just be a colorless creature . . .
This Tim theme is making my creatures seem like they are going to love that Gorgon Flail I added earlier.
Give it to me, G!
Well . . . at least it’s unblockable? Hey, while we’re doing that, how about . . .
For getting in a few hits as well with the other cool stuff we have here and there. I’m not sold on the “hit trigger” of removing a counter, but we’ll see. It’s a very, very gentle brake on the +1/+1 counter themes I suppose, so there’s that.
Next?
Really. I got a +1/+1 counter helper right after Ferropede. All right, come on in, lil’ Animation Module. Umm . . . ? What does that inspire me to do? I’m surprised that I haven’t gotten a good card or two to push my Selesnya theme. I wanted to wait until we were all done, but instead, let’s give a little more support for Orzhov, which I feel needs it still.
Next up is . . . ?
Ummm . . . do I want an Earthquake variant this good? It hoses ground creatures, artifacts, makes it’s on 8/8 beater, it’s good. It’s arguably the best Earthquake variant ever made. I feel like it’d clear out most of the stuff is running, the colorless stuff, and the Boros Aggro. At best, Gruul might want it. But’s just good, right? All right, let’s let Gatherer lead. And . . . duh . . .
Has to be the follow-up here. Duh.
Next up?
Nah. It’s a pretty crappy mana making card. How about instead I go with Prismatic Lens, which is identical but a mana cheaper? And then we can go with, say,
Smooth that mana! All right Gatherer, I’m hoping for some good loving tonight, right?
Well, all right my Gatherer friend, that works well! Mana for the win and um . . . Elves for the win! Everybody loves it! It’s a classic, as you all know, and has a strong place for the Cube. Speaking of key cards for a certain archetype . . .
There aren’t that many cards that’ll help make the Gruul theme work without breaking the Cube (see Crucible of Worlds) , but this is a strong option. O Gatherer, My Gatherer . . .
All right, head on in. I actually like this a lot as an early 1/1 creature for every deck and a spot of equipment for later smashery. Good stuff. What else? How about a solid piece of equipment that plays into one of our themes?
I was thinking about this as a good pair with Hankyu, and the theme of Tims and tapping for little chunks o’ damage. I was really considering Thornbite Staff here.
Next?
Nope sorry, but no Conspiracies here. How about . . . Take Inventory? Nah, need more than one card, not feasible for Cube. And then . . .
Now that works. It’s another Elf. It’s another 2-drop 2/1, and it’ll help ramp-ish stuff too. No doubt it’s solid. And with its value, lets toss in. How now Brown Gatherer?
I do like adding another Wall or two for my potential Azorius Defender matters theme. But this is not necessarily the way to do it. I do like adding another Wall, but this 0/6 grounder in a color that already has some other Walls feels a bit much. How about I veto it for Fog Bank instead?
And then we’ll go:
Why? A few reasons, the Wall is very splashable for the Azorius defender matters theme. Plus, as a way of tapping and shooting a player for damage, it’s in the same genre of the other cards in the theme. I want to identify cards that can play multiple roles and thus be drafted by multiple archetypes. Take Stinging Barrier as a good, but expensive example, as both a defender and a way of shooting something for damage. Two archetypes. Start looking for that synergy.
For example, there are a lot of quality cards with defender I could add that fit these themes. Both Wall of Omens and Mnemonic Wall give you clean card advantage, both replacing themselves, and giving you a creature as well. A defender making mana like Overgrown Battlement or Axebane Guardian, as well as Sylvan Caryatid are solid. Want a Looter for Blue? How about Bonded Fetch? Coral Barrier arrives and makes a token creature too. Wall of Kelp will tap and make Wall tokens. Jeskai Barricade can be your Wall version of Whitemane Lion. From Thermo-Alchemist to Thing in the Ice to Sanctum Plowbeast to Wall of Reverence, we have a lot of defender options out there that play into these strengths.
Next?
All right, well, I was waiting on getting some mana making like this before we figured out what was what. At first I was thinking about the Karoo Guild Lands, like Dimir Aqueduct or Simic Growth Chamber. But as I got cards that really care about lands types, the shock duels from the same block, like Sacred Foundry and Breeding Pool make a lot more sense now. Would it make sense to add in all ten as solid mana smoothing elements? Especially given their proclivity to helping cards like Allied Strategies and Armored Ascension? I think so.
Enter:
All right then. Welcome ten-set of lands! Now what?
Wow. That really locks down my Dimir as a graveyard friendly color. Or does it? It’s a brilliant sort of game ender. Could my Dimir be milling? With a few milling friendly cards? Perhaps! In the meantime, Nemesis of Ending Games Quickly is here. You don’t need a lot of swings to end the game. How about another 6 mana 4/4 flyer to help push the theme along?
It feels like a pretty solid addition to the theme. And unlike junk like Millstone, it actually does things to help out. Gatherer, whatcha got?
. . .
??
Are there enough artifacts to matter? Do I really want this? We have 20 artifacts right now, and winners like Flayer Husk and Bone Saw certainly pushing my artifact into dangerous territory. So for now, Release feels totally unneeded. How about a smaller artifact-ish answer instead? How about something on theme over in Green?
Next up is . . .
I just added that in already. Ah well, how about another taxing-ish ability instead? How about . . .
This was originally Rhystic Scrying, because Rhystic Study is too powerful, and I don’t have a lot of card draw yet. I liked this for a few reasons. First, in most duels, it’s a solid version of Concentrate. But if you need to get a card into the graveyard for reanimation or flashback or something, you can pay the cost yourself to draw and discard instead. But I felt the unreliability of the simple two-mana tax wasn’t enough to sell me. So I swapped it over. Sorry taxes!
And the extra card is
It gets you lands and is a super-secret defender too boot. All right Gatherer . . . whatcha got?
Already got it. Whatcha got?
All right, head on in. I was thinking about adding you in with the Rogue's Passage. Next?
Well I was waiting for my final archetype. Did I just get it? I was looking at White and Green tokens, but I still haven’t flipped over a single Green token making card. But right now I have 3 White auras (if you count Caribou Range), 3 Green auras, and 3 more enchantments when I have just 19 non-creatures in those colors, so 9 of 19, now 10 of 20, are enchantments or auras. So that’s my theme. Plus I have Sram to draw cards from Auras in here already.
But the problem with this is White. Here let show you:
Here are my archetypes in Blue right now — counters with Simic in theory, mill and graveyard loving in Dimir, tapping Tims with Izzet, defenders with Azorius, and a bit of an ETB in-color theme. So 5.
Here are my Greens — counters with Simic, Elves with Golgari, land sacrificing and recurring with Gruul, enchantments with Selesnya? Just four archetypes.
White?
Graveyard and reanimation with Orzhov, defender with Azorius, aggro with Boros, internally, tap and kill and tokens, and enchantments with Green? Which is 6.
Black has just 4 and no internal archtypes. Red 5 with one taxing internal one. So that means we have 1 more archetype in White to support, and 1 fewer in Green and Black. And remember that Blue right now has one single archetype card with Sphinx of Magosi.
What I need is:
1 internal archetype to balance Black
1 internal archetype to balance Green
1 removal of an archetype to balance White
Green got lucky when it already had +1/+1 counters as an internal archetype and I grabbed it for Simic, but we have one forced gold creature, and it can move auras too don’t forget, and 1 creature than gets counters — nothing major.
So here is what I’m thinking to fix this:
- Pull counters from Simic and keep it an internal only mechanic for Green
- Give Simic a brand new mechanic that is not related to counters at all
- Pull one of White’s archetypes to help balance. 2 thoughts — pull reanimation and give Orzhov the tap and kill archetype or make Selesnya tokens instead of enchantments.
- Give Black an internal archetype — suggestions include discard or suicide Black
So . . .
What would make sense for Simic that’s not token related? Blue and Green ramp? Control? Hmmm . . . looking at what’s in my deck already, would an untap theme make sense here? And then push Izzet a little more in a counterburn direction, with the Prodigal Sorcerer cards it has underlying that theme. Then give Green and Blue some more untap effects beyond the two they have right now.
Make discard a subtheme for Black. Unless we get a different archetype via Gatherer like Mono-Black control or suicide Black.
Push tokens to Selesnya officially. Don’t add in Ancestral Mask, but something else to solidify Selesnya
Now, what else would work?
Two of Black’s archetypes are graveyard oriented, and I feel there was some strong overlap for Black. Are the cards that we want in Black for Dimir graveyard fun and milling that different than Orzhov graveyard fun and animation? So here is what I was thinking instead. We have had a White tap and kill section randomly given from the very beginning. Move that to Orzhov. Give Dimir reanimation too, and let it choose from the milled cards as well so those will fit together.
The result:
White’s internal archetype remains tokens, I keep Selesnya as enchantments and move in Ancestral Mask, and then Black has very distinct archetypes.
I like that more. I forced Orzhov with cards like Restoration Gearsmith and Unburial Rites. But that would give Orzhov a very distinct anti-creature role. Is that okay? I think so, running Orzhov as a different sort of control deck. (Another option might be to move Orzhov to tokens, and leave the tap and kill stuff internal White)
So I am making these changes:
Out:
In:
And now Ancestral Mask for Selesnya and . . . Heliod's Pilgrim to shore up that archetype as well
All right random peoples. Here we go! Random Up!
Who wants to swing and have their combat damage prevented? It’s a fast early drop and plays well into Boros space, among other places. It’s sort of like a baby Iroas, God of Victory. So let’s pump that theme up by adding in our good God of Beats! Iroas for the win.
Gatherer, what do you have to me tonight, my lovely?
Self-gating is fun! Know what else is?
Get your self-bounce on! End that Wanderlust or whatever. Reload that ETB creature. You’ve got this! Gatherer, swing and swing!
Fits into the Red tax theme a little. But I don’t want to push land destruction too much, that’s a little mean. Why not flesh out the counterburn of Izzet a little more obviously?
It counters. It burns. You are welcome.
What else, oh Master G?
It’s an Elf? It’s another morph body to help with the numbers. I like it. So I have a ton of Green creatures in already, we are up to 19 of 25. So I am not adding in more Green stuff yet. Instead I am hitting up another color that I think will benefit from morph-dom.
Colorless, does something fun, and works.
Next?
I think this is a very good card for both Boros and Selesnya. In a similar light, let’s flesh out the Selesnya a bit more with . . .
Which, by the way, would be a fun card to put on a Skirmisher!
Gatherer?
Fodder for the Order of the Ebon Hand. How about I give you a good sacrifice outlet to use with it?
Next?
Umm . . . At first I was totally going to reject this, but it oddly works well with stuff like Rhystic Tutor and Errant Minion and stuff. Remember you are tapping two mana to lock down one land, it’s not the most powerful card of all time. All right, come on in! And since we’re bringing in a way to tap a land . . .
. . . adding in its opposite makes sense too. What up McG?
Well that’s interesting. Plays into where I was looking, and can be a powerful card drawing engine in Orzhov. It might prove to be a little too good, we’ll see. Come on in! And here, let me give you a fun colorless card to work with.
I like this for a few reasons. The ingest ability works with Dimir’s milling. And we can drain from some life if we have another colorless dork out, and it’s a 3/2 for 3 mana, so it’s right on curve and powerful. It has a lot to offer this Cube.
On that note Gatherer, what surprise do you have next for us?
Are you kidding me? How did I hit random card again and get the same exact card? I thought I hadn’t hit it, but nope, back to back cards. Silly. All right . . .
All right. We have Elvish Bard and Venomous Breath, if you’ll recall, so how about . . .
Lure hits a lot of quality. If your foe has a ton of great walls you can’t punch through, Lure some chump! Are you playing Selesnya enchantments? Lure! Want to use Thicket Basilisk or Venomous Breath to destroy an entire team? Lure! You’ve got this.
Next?
Nope. Not enough Clerics to run. A Solider themed leader? That would be here, but not Clerics, sorry. What about . . .
Gatherer why are you giving me tribal junk that’s not in my Cube? Let me count my Wizards. Two. Not enough. Ah well . . .
Perfect! I’m adding in Megrim as well. Black will now be all about the discard too.
Next?
Well, it’s uh . . . not the worst 1-drop I’ve seen in Red? Note that you don’t have to sacrifice to shoot the creature that blocks this. You could sacrifice it to shoot another blocker. Its damage will pile up with the various burn layered here as well. It was made pre-stack change, so originally you could be blocked, put damage on the stack, and then Shock a blocker, for two more damage, which gave it a lot more range. That’s gone though.
Any other janky but feasible 1-drops that one of my colors could use to support its theme? It may not be a 1-drop, but here you go:
It fits a lot of places and fills a cool hole as an Elf and a fun card.
All right . . . G!
Ah yes, the Black Hammer, so named because of its similarity to Hammer of Bogardan. It’s a great card with a lot of cachet back in the old days. And it works with stuff in Black already like Corpse Connoisseur and the graveyard fun theme of Dimir. How about with . . .
I’m sure you know what that’s doing there.
G? G? G!!!???!?
Well if you weren’t sure I could shift more to Counterburn, that’s a good example. Now let’s give a few archetypes in this Cube a major, major tool to fight for . . .
? ? ? Enter the Thunderdrome. Three archetypes enter, one archetype leaves!
Okay Gatherer, thanks for that Counterspell-ing fun time there. Now?
All right, head on in. I wouldn’t choose you as my representative from all things delve, but all right. And how about we give Blue . . .
Those both work well.
Gatherer . . .
Should I add another cycle of lands for my Cube that make the mana for folks to fight over?
And what would work? The Vivid lands (like Vivid Grove)? The Battles with the various land types like Sunken Hollow? (Canopy Vista, Cinder Glade, Prairie Stream, and Smoldering Marsh are the others).
Because of the cards that card about land type, let’s do the Battle lands. All five head in!
Next Gatherer of my Heart?
Well all right then! How about another great cheap spell that will handle problems?
Boros for the win baby!
And . . . Gatherer . . . hmmm . . .
Well don’t forget counters in Green! How about a card that combines counters and my Selesnya theme?
It does very well with the counters, as you can often get the lands early, or build up counters, and it’s a nice aura for Selesnya to drop as well.
What Ordeal do you have for me next Gatherer?
Not bad, in some circumstances. Now I want something to shore up my team a little . . .
I only have like 5 or 6 creatures with morph or megamorph right now. I need some more to give the Cube enough to never be able to be sure who got what, and this is a good tool for that.
All right Gatherer? Will you toss me some synergy or a stumbling block?
Huh. Synergy it is! This card was just in Planechase and never printed since in a later product. And it exists. It’s a real card, so here it is all awesome and such. Enchant this two-drop and it spits out token creatures with the alacrity of a Verdant Force! How about another classic target for enchanting, but different, and slower.
All right G! Hit me up!
Okay, now how about a little Black milling, this time on the self-side?
Next?
Hmmm . . . I feel like that’s a bit too much. Is it just me? No thanks. We are so tempoed right now, it feels too much to me right now. So, I’ll hit that random card again and.
All right that’s fine. Too bad the 0/4 ain’t a defender, but it still works for this Cube. It’s a nice, light, low-pressure way to get something out there for free. I’m going to follow that lead with . . .
The ability to only get something two more than the sacrificed creature is a strong brake on abusing it, unlike Natural Order and similar stuff.
Next?
Boil.
No thanks, too hoser-y for Cubes. What else?
Meh. I put it in, but meh. I’ve seen better. All right, how about we add this with
That way I am caring about enchantments as well from that angle and getting close to shoring up the Selesnya theme.
Random?
Wall of Swords">
Sometimes I just flip a good card for my Cube. Defender Wall of Swords it is. And while I’m thinking about it, how about:
Next is . . .
Bone Saw. Already in. Then Gruul Guildgate, but my two color lands are concluded for now. So what’s next?
All right Fallen Empires. I’ll add you into my Cube. And while I’m doing that, how about . . .
Gathering my Hopes?
That’s fine. It works well here. And how about . . .
Works to tap something for various effects, or untap for Blue and Green giving it multiple synergies for me. All right Gatherer, Cube me Up!
Well that’s a little disappointing. I’ll add in a cool card for messing around with stuff via tapping and untapping with inspired and hopefully it’ll do more for my Cube than a generic fatty with little else to recommend.
Who’s got next?
Lol! Nope! The next card is a lot more powerful, and will also be rejected, Armageddon. So third times a random Cube element . . .
All right Blue, there you are. Let’s do one more creature for Green to be enchanted —
It’s an Elf, with hexproof, and costs just two mana with a built-in level of evasion.
And what, pray tell, will be next?
Random Gatherer Says
Hmmm. Still hitting those defender Blues. What could I do here instead of another Fog Bank variant?
How about instead I do a take on Blue removal?
Now I want to hack out the last few creatures in Green
I want this card in my deck for a few reasons. First, it’s good to run as an Elf lord who can also make more Elves. Seconds, as a creature with a valuable tap ability, it feels like it plays into good space for the Simic design as well
Next?
Sangromancer is the next random card. Now Sangromancer plays into the new Mono-Black discard theme, so I like it. It’s also a good adjunct for Orzhov’s theme as well. So what else do I like here?
It’s a nice 2-drop, also on the discard wagons, and rolls a solid ability for us as well.
All righty Random G. What do you have for me today?
All right Red. Get that Rorix on! Now I wish this were Kamahl or Jeska or something from that block instead. But I’ll take it.
How about . . .
I’m sure you can see why as well. Gotta get your Aura target on.
Random?
Whoa. More in that tempo-ish aspects of Red. All right, let’s do it. Petradon it is. Again, I want to finish out my Green creatures, so . . .
All right folks, what’s left?
Already have it. Next?
All right, it’s in. Hmmm . . . what makes sense?
I’m sure you can see why. Dimir and potentially Simic have interesting uses for it. What’s next?
All right head on in. And how about I also toss in
Again, I’m confident that you can see the value here for both Simic and Izzet. What’s next good Gatherer?
All right, head on in. I also cheat a bit and toss in my 26th creature, but considering it’s mana acceleration, I don’t think we’ll get much pushback.
We only have 6 spots left in Green, and there are two cards I have to add. We’ll do it soon, but I want to keep it open in case I get a useful on color random card.
And on that note, that seems like a good place to call it! We’re about 75% of the way through the Cube right now, inspired and fleshed out by all things Random over at Gatherer. Are you ready for the last chapter with the rest of the random stuff and the final injection of cards? I am!!!!!!!!!!!!
