Real Life Commander: Rosheen Meanderer

Reddit

Hello folks! I hope you are having an equally productive and safe day today! Today I want to add on to my next real-life Commander deck. This is a deck that was usually inspired by one of my columns for you and I wanted to play it in real life. This represents my real-life article, not the best of, so it may be missing a few cards here and there.

Say hello to Rosheen Meanderer!

Rosheen Meanderer

Rosheen is a pretty awesome Giant Shaman to lead a fun Gruul build! I even wrote about her as a part of my Budget Commander series.

My real-life deck actually goes into a different direction, which we'll discuss below. Before we do, let's discuss the Commander 2020 elephant in the room. Zaxara!

Zaxara, the Exemplary

Up until now, Rosheen Meanderer was cool as the only leader of a deck that wanted to play into an "X effect matters" build. However, we now have this little Nightmare Hydra that adds Black and Blue to your color. I am saddened by the lack of Red here. No Fireballs! Also note that Zaxara taps for mana to help the cause but doesn't trigger on abilities just spells.

Now where do I see my build? Great question!

The old build ran a bunch of X matters effects like Gorilla Shaman and Flameblast Dragon. This deck is different.

I was inspired by the classic archetype Fire Elves. This was Standard legal and used a number of mana Elves headlined by Priest of Titania. Then it would run some X Burn effects like Fireball and slay.

This deck wants to do the same. I want to lean heavily into Elves, and then from there into X spells as well as some creatures.

Ready? Let's see my deck's plans in action.

Thousand-Year Elixir

To begin with, any Fire Elves deck will need tapping and untapping support, and the best card for that is Thousand-Year Elixir. It will let your Rosheen tap on arrival and untap for just one mana and tap for another four. That's a load of mana! It'll also work with your many tapping hombres as well.

Fanning the Flames
Comet Storm

Now's let's open with the Fire part of Fire Elves. I have a number of X Red spells that are in here to smash people's face. They include expected cards like Comet Storm as well as the less expected kicker Fanning the Flames, which is downright sick here. Tap Rosheen. She'll pay for the kicker and have a little mana left over for your pleasure. You'll keep your spell and you'll deal a lot damage to a key dork, planeswalker, or player. Lots of value here!

Savageborn Hydra
Genesis Hydra

What if we had Tree Elves instead of Fire Elves? Imagine the powerful Hydras available to your typical ramp build enabled with Elves and other effects. Here you can see two Hydras in my build, and they aren't the only ones. They are sort of the Elves' pets, and they aren't something you want to underestimate. Because they attack and swing, they are often more flexible that mere burn, and I want to enjoy them!

Orochi Hatchery
Kessig Wolf Run

Orochi Hatchery is awesome here as Rosheen by herself can be 2/2 without using any other mana. If you tap the mana used for Rosheen then you have 4/4 spent and that's a big deal. I also have a few effects here and there that run X's in addition to spells. Kessing Wolf Run is my favorite as it'll allow you to turn a Hydra or Elf into a winner. I also like things in here like Citanul Flute that can net a load of card advantage over time.

Radha, Heir to Keld
Elvish Archdruid

Next let's look at some of the Elves in Fire Elves. I run many Elves that tap for mana from Radha, Heir to Keld to the powerful Elvish Archdruid. Both are powerful mana makers and play nicely here in my build.

Joraga Warcaller
Immaculate Magistrate

I also have other "Elf Matter" effects like Joraga Warcaller and Immaculate Magistrate. Both of these can bump a bunch of Elves. I love the Magistrate's permanent boosting for a leader named Rosheen. You can also invest Joraga Warcaller with a lot of ramped mana and grow it and your team beside. Note that this tag team works very well together.

Garruk, Primal Hunter
Reforge the Soul

Wanna draw some cards? I hear ya! Gruul needs that card flow! Badly!

Magus of the Candelabra
Quest for Renewal

Here are two of my last two cards for the deck. Magus of the Candelabra is amazing here! Tap Rosheen. Untap four lands. Tap for mana. I have two lands in here that tap for two mana and if you happen to have one of these, you'll net more mana! And this doesn't have to be tied to an X cost either. The world is your oyster. Meanwhile Quest for Renewal will help with the mass untapping! Get it on!

Wanna take a look-see at the deck? Great!

Before we do, I was torn between three titles:

X Marks the Spot - It's funny. It's rare I do funny.

Rosheen's Fire Elves - This is my normal sort of title where I mash two ideas or more for a deck and then give them both to you.

Elves and Their Hydra - The two tribes supported in this build. Other than Magus of the Candelabra, Arashi, the Sky Asunder, Eternal Witness and Solemn Simulacrum, every creature in this build is one or the other. I like this duo concept as well.

I'm going with X Marks the Spot in real life, but I am triply torn!

Here you are!

And there you go! Now what did you think? Did you enjoy the core idea of the deck and the cards that were chosen? Anything I missed? Anything you want to try out? Just let me know in the comments below and I'll respond to you! (I always try to respond to any comment in the first few days.)

Thanks again!
