Top Ten Underplayed Planeswalkers in Commander

Reddit

Hello awesome folks! Last week I did a top ten list where I looked at the ten most underplayed cards in the Commander format as well as a few honorable mentions. There were two planeswalkers in that list, and it inspired me to write up this one. You can find that list here.

You can assume that that today's version of the most underplayed planeswalkers for the format includes that Sarkhan at #1 and Chandra at #2. All of last week's cards came in under 10k and just one was more than 5k uses over at EDHREC.com and most were under 2k, as well as my 'walkers. This week's list should all have under 5k planeswalkers, and they are the ones that are making my list this week. This list will not include planeswalkers recently published in the last year that haven't made their way over to EDHREC.com yet. Ready?

Honorable Mention #1 - Gideon, Ally of Zendikar

Gideon, Ally of Zendikar

This is the Portent of this list. Last week I had Portent on my list with just fewer than 10k and made the case that Portent should be played way much more and then be a staple, rather than an occasional card. I am making the same case here. Gids is played in 4,252 decks at around 1% of decks that use the color white, so he comes in under 5k, but not by much, but my argument here that he is so good, and just a few dollars these days, that he should be played more.

He dominated his format as a 4-drop with all abilities all getting used then and there. He can +1 to make and attack as all Gideons do as a 5/5. You can 0 him to make a 2/2 dork of the Knight and Ally persuasion. That is good in token brews, going wide brews, midrange to make stuff over time, and Knight and Ally caring brews. His -4 on arrival to the battlefield will make a Glorious Anthem emblem that cannot be answered, good for aggro and going wide tokens.

Super friends? Boros aggro? Selesnya tokens? Azorius control? A midrange brew that runs 5 or 6 planeswalkers? It's pretty strong and flexible and quite good and should be played in more decks in the format. Consider this, there are hundreds more (4,576) Teyo, the Shieldmage vs this, and this is much better. And it's cheap so you cannot just say it's cost and move on.

Honorable Mention #2 - Kaya, Bane of the Dead

Kaya, Bane of the Dead

This is a powerful 6-drop loyalty 7 that can force your foes to ignore their hexproof from common things that grant it like Swiftfoot Boots. You can -3 her to exile a dork which permanently answers it: no regeneration, no indestructible, no hexproof to keep it save, only shroud and Lightning Greaves will work. It avoids common answers like Heroic Intervention and Rootborn Defenses and Lazotep Plating. Nice right? And it's also pretty good in Type Four where you have infinite mana but just one card per turn, and Kaya is in just 1,338 decks despite answering a common response to removal and hiding as well as providing creature control in one card. She hits my honorable mention since she's 6 mana and not every deck can use that, but she's pretty solid in Superfriends, proliferate, control, and midrange.

#10. Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker

Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker

This is one of the lowest used mono-color non-PW Deck 'walkers over at EDHREC.com but it's also worse in Commander than 20-life formats by a bit, so I am giving it my ten spot overall here. It's just in 1,064 decks. He is a fine 5-drop for your next deck. His +1 will turn into a 4/4 flying, Red, hasted, indestructible Dragon for the turn and smash for 4. It's better than your "turn into a dork and swing" ability of all the Gids since he has flying and an attack on the first turn with haste.

Obviously, an attacking 4/4 isn't as powerful in 40 life multiplayer as 20 life, but you are still dropping 10% of their starting life each time it hits. Then you can -3 him to Lightning Blast a dork, nice removal of stuff that's annoying you. Not bad, and he works in the same decks that Gideon does, attacking, destroying, and doing the things.

#9. Tezzeret the Schemer

Tezzeret the Schemer

The first use of Treasure! This Dimir PW is in just 1,695 decks. He can +1 to make a Treasure...er...Etherium Cell. Then you can -2 him twice with his starting loyalty of 5 and give a dork +X/-X where that is your artifact count which can be removal on many dorks and going to a 0 defense is death to indestructible stuff. You can also pump a fat Commander for a boost for more Commander damage that turn, and a faster kill. He is very synergetic with himself, and his Cell making is strong in four or five color builds in the format, and I run him in places.

#8. Elspeth, Sun's Nemesis

Elspeth, Sun's Nemesis

I felt that this card was better coming out of our return to Theros in Standard and casual formats than its reputation, and it's defiantly underplayed in Commander as well. This is a 5 loyalty 4-cost 'walker that has three abilities, and I've never used the third and final one, but it's there. I use the -2 to make two dorks, and then attack next turn and make 2 more dorks and then on the third-turn -1, attack with two with 3/2s and two 1/1s, and then after it dies, recast it and -2 to make two more 1/1s. It makes a ton of bodies for blocking in Superfriend decks, and it loves getting recast after being destroyed or removal as most Superfriend decks don't lean much into recursion, so the self-exile to recast it her again and again works quite well. I use her in multiple brews. She's in just 2,868 decks and she is definitely underappreciated at the kitchen table.

#7. Chandra, the Firebrand

Chandra, the Firebrand

Four mana for a 3-loyalty walker that is here for that second ability. Her +1 to ping any target for a damage is good for things like Birds of Paradise or Esper Sentinel, but it's pretty weak overall, but that -2 to copy an instant or sorcery for free this turn is where it's at. You get one Fork that turn and then you need to wait a round and then if she is still alive you can +1 her and then get ready for the other -2 in a turn to wind up with two Forks overall, which is pretty sweet. Copy making works well with the magecraft trigger and the powerful copy suite of cards in Esper that was just printed. Like her lots. She is in just 1,954 decks despite being just one color and fitting into a popular archetype at the kitchen table.

#6. Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas

Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas

Our final Tezzeret! This 4-drop can +1 to dig five and draw an artifact. Nice card flow here in artifact matters decks. You can also -1 him to turn an artifact into a 5/5 dork permanently, which can block potential attacks on him from a much stronger range of stuff out of nowhere or add to your player death potential by swinging, and you can do that three times with his starting loyalty to give you 15 power and toughness across multiple dorks for his initial 4 mana cost, which seems worth it from where I am sitting, but he is run in just 2,039 decks despite artifacts being a top 5 archetype in EDHREC.com. It's card flow and creature making, and that's pretty powerful, and should be getting more play.

#5. Sarkhan the Mad

Sarkhan the Mad

This 5-drop, 7 loyalty dork only has no positive abilities but a high starting loyalty. The first ability is 0 to draw the top card of your library and then you lose loyalty equal to its cost, and that works well with top of library decks and iconic things like Sensei's Divining Top and Sylvan Library. That's strong card flow potential over time. The -2 will force a targeted creature to sacrifice it and then make a 5/5 flying Dragon. I like that in Rakdos midrange where you can turn your Solemn Simulacrum or Avalanche Riders into a powerful 5/5 flyer after they did their thing, and I love it in a Rakdos Steal and Sac deck with temporary steal effects like Threaten. You can also happily give away a 5/5 flyer for that Consecrated Sphinx your foe has. You can also -4 him once to shoot a player for damage equal to your Dragon's power, which obviously wants to be in a Dragon deck as a player killer with a load of shells around which to build him. There are only 1,328 decks that build around him, which is a real shame considering just how good he is in various shells.

#4. Chandra, Pyromaster

Chandra, Pyromaster

This is a 4-drop, four loyalty option for your Red builds. This Chandra can +1 to shoot a player and their creature for a damage each and keep it from blocking, so nice in aggro and Voltron decks looking to swing. It's here for that 0 ability, which was the first Chandra to exile the top card of your library and play it this turn, which we know by now is great card flow, and it has gotten better in the last year or so as exiling matters and casting from exiling has become an archetype in Rakdos (Prosper, Tome-Bound) and Gruul (Durnan of the Yawning Portal). It's also strong card flow on a four drop planeswalker. Love her loads here as she offers way much!

#3. Kaya, Ghost Assassin

Kaya, Ghost Assassin

Being the face card in a set that was all about multiplayer drafting is this fun thing. She is a 5-drop with all 0 and minus abilities. She can -1 to Syphon Soul for the turn a way to win the game and also strong in a life gain and loss decks. You can also -2 her to Syphon Mind for the turn although you only draw one card no matter how many discards happen. You can do that twice with her starting loyalty. Then you can 0 to flicker her and reset her loyalty and lose two life, or a creature even one you do not control, and then you can use that in blink decks to reload a nice ETB ability or to flicker out your foe's only blocker until their next turn and attack. She's very strong in any multiplayer format since she scales up against multiple opponents, and yet she is just in 2,621 decks and that should be loads more from Superfriends to Blink to Midrange to life gain to discard brews. She is, to my mind, one of the 10 best planeswalkers ever printed for multiplayer.

#2. Gideon Jura

Gideon Jura

The original Gids! This 5-drop dork can use all of his abilities on arrival to the battlefield. I like his -2 to destroy a tapped dork out of nowhere on your turn, and you can do it three times with his initial loyalty. I also like the +2 to force your targeted foe to attack him next turn with an 8 loyalty to drop, which can keep the heat off you for a few turns, as well as keep blockers from blocking your things after they swing, and you can do your Gideon thing and turn into a creature and swing, which I love on an empty board. I like how the forcing attacks will let your foes have tapped stuff to target next turn, and I like how you have 8 loyalty afterwards to stay alive for a turn or two, and keep your other planeswalkers alive, so he is nice in decks with other planeswalkers. I love him in multiplayer in shells where he can shine. He's only in 2,320 decks.

#1. The Kenrith Twins

Rowan Kenrith
Will Kenrith

Coming in at 1,900 even and 2,573 respectively are these two Commander options. They can partner with each other as well as play roles singly in decks. Each are 6-drops with 4 loyalty and +2, -2, and -8 abilities. Rowan is +2 to force the attacks to attack someone, not just you or her, and -2 to Bolt all tapped dorks a player controls. She is a red version of Gids with the better forcing since they can attack others than Gideon and the target of the tapped creature is all the ones that are targeted. Will's +2 will turn two opposers into 0/3 without any abilities, powerful as ways to answer planeswalkers and will die to Rowan's -2. Will's -2 will let any player draw two and then cast instants and sorceries for 2 fewer mana, which is nice card flow. He's a strong partner for Gideon....er...Rowan. Love them lots together!

And there we go, what did you think of my choices? Anything in here that I missed or got in the wrong order? Just let me know in the comments below! Next week we'll look at the most underplayed pieces of equipment.
