Top Ten Standard Legal Commanders

Reddit

We are living in an odd time. Potential Legendary leaders are everywhere. Each set debuts a ton of new options for Commander to lead a new deck. And while some, like Core Set 2020's Drakuseth, Maw of Flames are going to merely be variations on a theme of existing builds, many can sire brand new builds, like that same set's Gargos, Vicious Watcher, who is one of the first mono-Green legendary Hydras ever, and the first one that helps your tribe.

Drakuseth, Maw of Flames
Gargos, Vicious Watcher

We are living in an era of legendary creatures that are raining from the sky with tears of happiness.

And it's not just every set. Let's be honest - we currently have a legendary matters theme in Standard. And between Dominaria and War of the Spark, we have a massive number of legendary things right now.

We are living in the high times of Commanders, and the waters are likely to ebb away. In fact, we have more than 110 Standard Commanders right now!

Before the end happens? Let's take a looksee at what I consider to be the best Commanders right now in Standard.

10. Prime Speaker Vannifar

Prime Speaker Vannifar
Birthing Pod

Birthing Pod on a stick. That's Vannifar. What makes Commander work is that you have the ability to ensure that your deck can do something. When I know that my Pod deck will Pod, then I can more reliably build around it as a Commander player. I can have a more reliable Pod chain. Unlike the initial Pod, I don't have to spend any mana (or life) to use it, but I do have to wait a turn, which is why it's here instead higher on my. But our good Elf Ooze Wizard (Is she an Oozemancer?) does give you a guaranteed option, and you can run the Pod with her. She also triggers enters-the-battlefield triggers, death triggers, and has a lot of fun besides. Enjoy!

Now to be fair, of the various choices below, Vannifar is the least played. Although our Oozemancer is awesome, she doesn't get much play, so consider this a Vannifar Challenge.

9. Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain

Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain
Jhoira of the Ghitu
Jhoira's Toolbox

The good thing about New Jhoira is that she's much more Jhoira than Old Jhoira. She's not a Wizard. Take a look at her Toolbox. She's an Artificer. I'm glad that she's been recast, because the old Jhoira wasn't her. New Jhoira's even clearly Jhoira in other ways. Obviously, she brings a pro-artifact aspect. Cast an artifact? Control your Commander? Great! Draw a card. But that's not all. Much like Sisay was Captain of the Weatherlight and has a legendary-matters theme to demonstrate her bringing in crew, Jhoira was the first captain. She she'll also give you a trigger for that too. And she's been around for quite a while, so she lived during many of the events chronicled in the Sagas. She's perfectly matched in flavor and mechanics. Jhoira is awesome!

8. Golos, Tireless Pilgrim

Golos, Tireless Pilgrim

I may not like where Golos goes, (see my article from the other week here) but I cannot deny our Scout's power. It may be early days, but Golos is a strong card that has proved itself already. It can lead a five-color shell and is a reliable drop o n the 5th turn without needing a particular color to arrive. We also have a powerful backbreaking ability to flip up three cards and play them all for free. You can also fetch any land out onto the battlefield for free. There's nothing Golos can't do, and he may wind up hitting a lot higher on my list later on as he gets more play.

7. Tatyova, Benthic Druid

Tatyova, Benthic Druid

Tatyova is the leader that couldn't. I mean seriously - take a look at her. A 3/3 for five mana? No abilities when she arrives? No keywords at all to help make her a more powerful threat? She's not even a rare, mythic, or key character. All she does is have a single landfall trigger. Is that trigger anything that forces your foe to kill her immediately because she'll break the game open in just a few turns or land-drops? Nope! What's her landfall trigger? Draw a card and gain a life. That's it. But that's why she's so awesome. Drawing cards repeatedly and reliably under the radar is powerful. When you begin to play with her, you realize that there is a lot of strength under the hood. And others agree with me. Did you know that Tatyova has quietly become the 2nd most popular Simic leader on EDHREC? She's more popular as a leader than Edric, Spymaster of Trest. Only Ezuri, Claw of Progress has more decks. Get your Tatyova on and join her revolution!

I also consider Tatyova a good example of the value of a throwback, old school Commander leader who allows for your foes to interact and play the game. She's fun, she doesn't stop anyone from doing anything, and she's easy to handle if she gets out of hand. More of her please!

6. Yarok, the Desecrated

Yarok, the Desecrated

Who wants the triggers? We want those triggers!! Who wants the triggers? We do, we do!!! We love triggers, it's a part of our commander DNA. And guess what folks? Yup! Here's a leader that will double any enters-the-battlefield triggers that you may have, even from permanents like lands, artifacts, or enchantments. The potential here is just palpably intimidating. Because you are in Black, you can double your kill stuff like Ravenous Chupacabra. Card drawing with Blue? Cough Mulldrifter cough? Land fetching with Green? Thing destroying with Green? Bouncing with Blue? Stealing with Blue? Discarding with Black? Shoot, by the time you are done with your colors, you can destroy every permanent type (Acidic Slime or the Chupacabra), discard or draw, steal or bounce, counter or fetch lands, and recur any creature from your graveyard or into play. You can also kill your opponents with things like Gray Merchant of Asphodel. And that's just some of the synergies from creatures that arrive to the battlefield. Gain life from lands! Draw two cards from the arrival if Ichor Wellspring! Add blink engines in Blue. You get the idea. The power of the triggers is in your hand.

5. Nicol Bolas, the Ravager

Nicol Bolas, the Ravager

Welcome to my top five. Let's kick things off with ol' Bolas himself. Nicol Bolas, the Ravager is a strong 4-drop. He has a powerful 4/4 flying body out of the gate. He forces everyone else to discard much like the potent Liliana's Specter. He gives you access to all three Grixis colors. And he can flip later into a nasty planeswalker. He can draw a ton of cards, shoot people in the face for damage, and lot's more. He's strong in the mid-game, and better in the late-game. There's nothing here not to like.

Oh, and while I've only done it once thus far, I love casting him, flipping him in the same turn, and then -4'ing a giant dork that just got discarded. Bolas has game.

4. Teysa Karlov

Teysa Karlov

What makes Teysa III hit so highly on my list isn't her ability to help out creature tokens. Creature token lords already exist, and she's isn't putting them over the top. Nope! It's the fact that she doubles your creature death triggers. That's why she's so powerful. There are not a lot of Commander-able engines that help you with death triggers, but there're lots of ways to bring a team to the party in Orzhov. Everything from Blood Artist to Solemn Simulacrum bring a powerful suite of options to your Teysa Karlov deck. And she'll dig deep into power, as there are many options on both sides as creatures dying for the cause is something both colors want to do.

Cavalier of Dawn
Murder Investigation

Cards in White like Cavalier of Dawn from the latest set or Murder Investigation are downright abhorrent when you get two death triggers.

Yahenni, Undying Partisan
Kokusho, the Evening Star

We just have so many ways to abuse Teysa!! She's a fun card. And don't forget - even though she was just released in Ravnica Allegiance, she's already the most registered Black and White leader over at EDHREC.com. She's a hit and a half. Teysa on!

3. Niv-Mizzet Reborn

Niv-Mizzet Reborn

Who wants cards? Is it you? A few months ago back when War of the Spark was still unreleased, I saw this bad boy and wrote about him for you. I made the case that he was the best Five Color commander ever printed (with the caveat that any 5C tribal theme will trump him, Sliver Overlord will be better leading in a Sliver build, etc). And since then, we've had two Five Color dorks get printed - Morophon, the Boundless and Golos, Tireless Pilgrim. After looking at both, do I still hold to my argument that the Reborn iteration of Nivy will be the Five Color leader for most builds?

Yes, I do!

No one is ever likely going to get ten free cards on arrival barring a "Hey ma, let me stack my deck," trick. But it really doesn't matter, because even if I get a bad set of cards and flip over four lands, a Sol Ring, and a Cultivate, I am still drawing four cards when my Commander enters the battlefield. Why would you not run want to run that in everything you have? Card advantage matters. It's why you like most of the options on today's list. Tatyova isn't as popular as she is because people love gaining life that much. Nivy just doesn't draw a few cards here and there either. He draws an epic-amount of them! Blink him. Re-cast him after he dies. How can you not want to abuse tables with our Dragon Avatar?

He has played out as I expected, thus far in real life, and Nivy is awesome!

2. Feather, the Redeemed

Feather, the Redeemed

Hello Feather fans! No worries, I've got you covered. Here you go! You are welcome, anything else? Oh, you want me to talk about the Commander that has taken the world by storm? Did you know that this leader that has already become the most registered Boros leader on EDHREC.com and it's not even close? The leader who has stolen many a heart with self-heroic triggers and cards like Sunforger and more? The leader who has inspired many a build? Okay, sure thing.

This is Feather. Enjoy her. But she is still not my #1.

So, what is?

1. Muldrotha, the Gravetide

Muldrotha, the Gravetide

Muldrotha is. You could probably make an argument that any of my top few cards could be here, but it's hard to argue that Muldrotha is not the Queen of Standard Commanders right now. It's been roughly a year since she was released. And in that time? She has become the most popular card in her colors, and she has a lot more raw numbers that many others that are heavily played. For example, over at EDHREC, there are more (2403) than the next highest, Tasigur, the Golden Fang (1511). Tasigur has been in print for years, and he's really strong. Muldrotha blew by him in around a year. She hasn't just been a flash in the pan and faded.

You know how some leaders' decks are referred to as turning your graveyard as an extra hand? That's usually just puffery about how it makes the graveayrd more pertinent. Not here. Muldrotha literally converts your graveyard into another hand of permanents. She is amazing at grinding out games as she adds to the massive ground-swelling card advantage by letting folks cast and recast cards like Font of Fertility, Nihil Spellbomb, Terramorphic Expanse, and Mulldrifter.

At the end of the day, I just cannot see anyone taking this throne from her, until she is retired from Standard.

And there you have it! Those are my list of the best Commanders in Standard. What did you think of my list? Anything I missed? Just let me know, and thanks for reading!
