Hello awesome MTG and OTJ fans! I've got something fun for your consideration! Today we are looking at some great deck ideas featuring Outlaws of Thunder Junction for various formats, and I'll even add with a secret Standard one I'd like to build on Arena and try out. We'll typically look at kitchen table formats like Pauper/Peasant, Five Color, Highlander, Commander, Type Four and more!
Modal Matters
Riku of Many Paths introduced the world's first modal matters leader and OTJ gave us a bunch of new modal spells with spree. Riku gives you three colors of access in Commander and more outside of that with a 3-drop on curve 3/3 with a modal cast trigger. Note that ETB stuff doesn't count as Modal, it needs to be on the stack since this is a cast trigger. Your cast trigger will impulse draw two, toss a +1/+1 counter here with trample, or make a flying bird token! You can toss the Temur colors that really push this like spree's huge hit of Three Steps Ahead, with counters and copies and cards, or outside of Commander to add in White's sweeping instant speed with Final Showdown.
Crimes
Now let's turn to crimes matter with things like Marchesa who I nicknamed The Interaction Queen and built around here (Grixis Interaction with Marchesa in Commander | Article by Abe Sargent (coolstuffinc.com)). She is my favorite crime card since there is no once/turn break here, letting you turn a mana into card advantage multiple times. Many others in Grixis will have one trigger, like Standard player Vadmir, New Blood or the untapping mana Elf Hardbristle Bandit or the Treasure making Magda, the Hoardmaster. The new Gisa is amazing since she'll make two 2/2 tapped Rogue Zombies that get +1/+1 and menace from her static ability, when you commit that crime. This is deep, and remember, many older things are crimes too, just as a heads up.
Outlaws
Next let's turn to outlaws, none of which are brand new, but instead are a grouping of bad guys. Jasper is nasty as a 3-drop 4/3, and all of your dorks become Mercenaries and outlaws. His upkeep trigger exiles cards equal to your outlaw count from your foe's library and you can cast them with any color of mana! We also have a new version of everyone's least favorite partner, with a win con of your outlaws killing foes on arrival to the battlefield. You can give them first strike with At Knifepoint, recur them with Back in Town or Graywater's Fixer, and there's an entire Commander deck with this theme that adds White to Rakdos. This is very strong from where I am sitting!
Mounts and Vehicles
Thiis set introduced a new take on Vehicles that can swing without a rider, called Mounts, but with lesser abilities. We have three legendary dorks in Naya colors that care about this. Annie and Wylie will have tap triggers to either Impulse card flow two in the former's case, or draw and gain a life in the latter case. Tap for riding! The uncommon 2-drop Miriam will give Mounts and Vees hexproof on your turn to protect from targeted removal until their turn. Get it and run all up down!
Standard Artifact Tokens
This was inspired by Big Score (BIG) which will turn critter casts into either a 1/1 Gnome artifact or copy an artifact token. Ideally, you'd want to copy dorks in artifact form that would win you the game. Remember, the token that the Tyrant makes on death is an artifact dork so you can copy it. A 6/6 trampler that replaces itself? Nasty! Bigger artifacts will make free game winning Constructs with the Simulacrum Synthesizer. Baron Bertram Graywater will make you a 1/1 Rogue when they arrive, Legion Extruder can turn a smaller artifact token into a 3/3 beater, you can make Meteorites to ramp you or kill with ETB triggers with Roxanne, Starfall Savant. Sandstorm Salvager costs three and ETBs with a 3/3 Golem. You can copy an artifact you control with Three Steps Ahead. You can activate Transmutation Font to Tinker out your best artifact. You can make a free Map token with Worldwalker Helm when you make an artifact token and you can tap it to copy an artifact token you control, just like the Oltec! That's not all of Standard, that's just how deep OTJ and BIG are! I think you can easily make this work. I really like Bant here with the copies in blue/white and the Tyrant and Salvager in green, but the Baron is Orzhov and the Roxanne and Extruder are in red too. You could just do all but black, cut the Baron, or Bant and splash the Extruder and Roxanne. I think this is great, and I haven't seen any artifact token matters brews in the Standard articles here on CSI.com.
Here would be where my early brew would start:
Artifact Tokens | OTJ Standard | Abe Sargent
- Creatures (18)
- 1 Alquist Proft, Master Sleuth
- 1 Cityscape Leveler
- 1 Roxanne, Starfall Savant
- 2 Hulking Metamorph
- 2 Mondrak, Glory Dominus
- 3 Vaultborn Tyrant
- 4 Oltec Matterweaver
- 4 Sandstorm Salvager
- Instants (6)
- 2 Urza's Command
- 4 Three Steps Ahead
- Sorceries (2)
- 2 Molten Duplication
- Artifacts (9)
- 1 Thousand Moons Smithy // Barracks of the Thousand
- 1 Portal to Phyrexia
- 2 Solemn Synethesizer
- 2 Transmutation Font
- 3 Worldwaker Helm
- Lands (25)
- 2 Plains
- 2 Forest
- 2 Island
- 1 Hall of Tagsin
- 1 Mirrex
- 2 Meticulous Archive
- 3 Commercial District
- 4 Hedge Maze
- 4 Lush Portico
- 4 Restless Anchorage
The Anchorage is great since it attacks to make a Map token. Mirrex will make an artifact Phyrexian Mite, and Hall of Tagsin can tap for tapped Powerstones. I am splashing Red for two Molten Duplication and one Roxanne. My Smithy makes one giant sized Gnome token and can win the game if duplicated. My Font can Tinker for the powerful Portal, or Leveler. My last pull was double Food making 5/5 trampler for four mana and swinging for wins Bristlebud Farmer. I think this is pretty fun to build around, and could be the start of something interesting! Briarbridge Tracker? You could also make it more Red and toss in Gleaming Geardrake in a set of four. Collector's Vault? Novice Inspector? Deduce? Platoon Dispenser? Spyglass Siren? Intrude on the Mind? Secrets of the Key? Spider Food for interaction? Karn, Living Legacy? Malcator, Purity Overseer? Saheeli, the Sun's Brilliance? Try it out and see!
