After pushing the Modern format and refining its banned list, the popularity of the format has continued to explode. It's no wonder then that Magic's "other" format using a larger pool of more recent cards is now going away.
From Wizard's Extended announcement today:
As the popularity of Modern has continued to rise, Wizards of the Coast has made the decision to retire the Extended format. Too many formats can fracture a player base, so we’ve decided to focus efforts on our other Constructed formats.
The shutdown is a quick one for the soon-to-be-former format:
- Extended events cannot be scheduled after August 7, 2013. (And cannot take place after October 8, 2013.)
- Extended will no longer be supported on Magic Online after the August 7, 2013 scheduled downtime.
If you haven't considered playing Extended in the past couple years you don't have to worry anymore: You weren't alone. What do you think of losing Extended as a format?
