Silver-Bordered Jumpstart

Reddit

Jumpstart may well be the best way to play Magic with friends, especially casually with people who prefer a fun night of tabletop gaming than grinding match wins in draft. Here we reduce the prep time to grabbing two packs and shuffling them together.

Now half the fun of Magic is meta-game discussion, and there's nothing stopping you from indulging yourself in prep time and forethought. You can create your own Jumpstart packs to mold your Limited experience. Last week we indulged in the holiday spirit with festive silver-bordered cards. Tonight, we're luxuriating in four more pack designs, featuring some silver-bordered whimsy.

Let's leave it to chance because odds are the more you roll, the more fun you'll have. Like the Red pack from last week, this one yearns to roll dice early and often. Whenever you roll high, you'll benefit, either from making Steel Squirrel into a Mecha-Godzilla, or by creating actual squirrels with Chittering Doom. And you'll have double the chances to win big, thanks to Krark's loss.

Krark's Other Thumb

I like every Jumpstart pack to include a few kills spells, and today I tried to pick the goofy ones. Savage Punch is perfect. Band Together sounds like something I shouted amongst friends during late nights gaming.

What a game you'll have if you get Mad Science Fair Project rolling. Its main benefit is giving you an excuse to pick up a die every turn, but also you can use the mana to power out a large Hydradoodle. Just how many dice do you own? Put them in a cup and start shaking. Yahtzee!

You may well have noticed Free-Range Chicken. Clucking gets the blood thumping. I don't blame your excitement. A card that evocative really ruffles the feathers, and you likely felt the urge to start strutting yourself, bird style. Don't worry. This next pack will give you the perfect excuse.

Free-Range Chicken
Mesa Chicken

By the way, I love the gravity found in Mesa Chicken's flavor text. Truly, the Rooster Saga belongs among those of Kaldheim. Now then, this chicken and other cards in this pack invite us to get silly. We can dance for the Knight of the Hokey Pokey and talk in a funny voice for Emcee. We can remind ourselves we're playing a game and should be having fun.

A play off the original White Knight, the Knight of the Kitchen Sink has protection from any number of weird things. I find the loose-lips version the funniest. Think of how many dragons have open mouths roaring, for instance.

A little silver-bordered zaniness can go a long way. Luckily, we'll be diluting these packs with straight-laced ones, either designed by you or from the original Jumpstart box.

As far as the other cards, Lexivore will be good at killing opposing bombs, if unblocked. And Frankie Peanuts will help you strategize, scouting an opponent's plan and potentially trapping them in a bad decision. Though most of our cards are silly, a few require us to complement our opponent, and that's seriously a good idea.

Miss Demeanor

Let's get in the habit of complimenting each other more often, particularly among friends. Now it could be that you count woodland creatures as your friends. You know, the small ones with bushy tails. If so, this is the pack for you.

Squirrel Farm

If you've ever wanted to start your own Squirrel Farm, now's your chance. A word to the wise: build this pack with seven different Forest lands, illustrated by lesser-known artists.

Some might say amassing fields full of furry critters is its own reward, but we'll get additional benefit thanks to our Superior Numbers. Ivy Lane Denizen will set up shop and armor squirrels Redwall-style. Scion of the Wild will also grow with every acorn-nibbler we know, and, of course, we may Overwhelm our foe with our chittering swarm.

The card Clear Shot may seem out of place, but I found the idea of a squirrel lobbing an acorn amusing. I also liked the idea of Blasting Station, but I realize not everyone might feel the same way about squirrel slaughter. I'll leave its inclusion up to your discretion.

Now it's time to address the toy pile in the room. Yes, like the packs from last week, this one includes a holiday card.

Mishra's Toy Workshop

Clearly, this card is busted. But it also could bust you up laughing if you get into its holiday spirit. But don't fret if you don't own one or a bunch of squirrel plush toys. You can always substitute the card.

Substitute: Thriving Grove

Our last pack was inspired by another holiday card. Again, don't feel you need to taste test this one. You can replace it with something less fruity. Its flavor is rather powerful.

Fruitcake Elemental

Can you imagine Fruitcake Elemental leveling your opponents team with a Monstrous Onslaught? It would be like the climax of a monster movie, with everyone running away screaming. Towers toppling. Bridges breaking, and I'm watching it all giggling.

Now it's hard to hold onto a fruitcake for long. If the opponent has any number of chump blockers, you'll suffocate on the stench of rum-soaked apricots. But thanks to the life of Feed the Clan, you might power through. True, lifegain spells are situational at best, and you might be better off including a second Alpine Grizzly instead. Yes, better to accept the fact you'll have to gift Fruitcake Elemental to your opponent. From there it'll be a game of demurring and polite refusals.

"You're too kind. I couldn't possibly."

"No, please. I insist!"

"I'm allergic to gluten."

"That's ok. I baked this one with bone flour, made from my enemies."

Though fruitcakes are undeniably deadly, there's something intoxicating about ferocious synergy. We can double our power with Miming Slime, minus the downside. We can also create our own army with Fungal Sprouting. Draw a fresh hand with Hunter's Insight. Get formidable with Stampeding Elk Herd and Atarka Beastbreaker.

Substitute: Ravaging Riftwurm

Wishing you a happy holidays, and remember, stay safe and give your relatives nothing more dangerous than fruitcakes.
