Today Wizards of the Coast revealed their plans for in-store league play. The Kaladesh league will act as a live playtest with a preview season for Aether Revolt and full roll out for is planned for Amonkhet. At the start of the four week league players will receive three booster packs from which they will build a 30 card deck. Every week players will add a new booster and have the opportunity to change their deck as often as they like (from their card pool).
Aside from 30 card decks, there are some other changes from traditional tournament matches. In fact, the matches themselves will consist of a single-game. Players will also have access to a free mulligan at the start of their game.
This is not the first time Wizards has attempted an in-store league. Arena, which featured unique promos and the Vanguard format among other things, was part of their early organized play plan. Time will tell if this league will fill a similar role or act more as an on-ramp towards other tournaments.
