Yesterday we went over the White cards from Kaldheim and we had quite a few good ones. Today we will be going over the Blue cards, but before we begin, let us go over my grading scale.
I will not be going over cards that I believe will not see play in Standard and I will not be going over the Commander cards that will not see Standard play. For example, cards like Goldmaw Champion and Master Skald will be omitted since they are just Limited cards and saying, "This is just a Limited card" repeatedly gets old rather fast. Do not worry though, I will be covering all the rare and mythic cards in the actual Kaldheim set. So, if you like a certain rare or mythic, it will be mentioned in the review.
Keep in mind I'm rating all these cards for Standard playability. I will mention Modern applications if I believe the card has some.
Each card will be listed by color, then alphabetically by name.
Each card will be given a rating of 1-5. If a card would receive a 0, meaning it will see no play in that format ever, its rating is left off the list.
Rating | Explanation | Standard Examples
0 - Will never see play in this format (0 ratings are not listed).
1 - Unlikely to see play. (Divine Gambit)
2 - Could see fringe play, or occasional sideboard card. (Disdainful Stroke, Annul, Erebos's Intervention, Shadow's Verdict)
3 - Commonly played, staple in a single deck, or frequent play in several decks. (Righteous Valkyrie, Behold the Multiverse, Solemn Simulacrum)
4 - Format staples. Sees play in multiple decks, one of the best cards in the format. (Saw it Coming, Fabled Passage, Bonecrusher Giant)
5 - Format warping. If you are in these colors, you play that card or keep that card in mind when building decks. (Ugin, the Spirit Dragon, Embercleave, The Great Henge)
Now that we have that out of the way, let's begin!
Blue
Alrund, God of the Cosmos - 2 - Alrund just does not do enough. The Raven is a fine blocker but that is all this card has going for it. It is terrible at drawing cards unlike Gadwick, the Wizened and Graven Lore. Not the finisher that a control deck is looking for.
Alrund's Epiphany - 3 - It is no Nexus of Fate but is like a Part the Waterveil, but smaller scale. Smaller scale does not mean worse though since it also costs less. I am a fan of Alrund's Epiphany since it can act as a finisher, especially backed up by other Epiphanies, a planeswalker, or creature like Brazen Borrower, Faceless Haven, Bonecrusher Giant, or whatever creature you have laying around.
Annul - 2.5 - We got a TON of new sagas this set and a lot of them are extremely good. Depending on how the meta game shapes up, Annul could be a main deck card like Aether Gust was. At the very least it's an excellent sideboard card against Yorion.
Ascendant Spirit - 3.5 - Figure of Destiny has color shifted to Blue! Ascendant Spirit is a great pay off for tempo decks since it gives you something to dump your mana into if your opponent does not play anything on their turn.
Avalanche Caller - 3 - Avalanche Caller is another snow finisher but will be played in Snow control or midrange decks. Late game in a control deck this creature can just outright kill your opponent. Especially if you are playing Narfi, Betrayer King and Teferi, Time Raveler to pitch Narfi. Late game you can just start fire balling your opponent.
Behold the Multiverse - 3 - I was a huge fan of Glimmer of Genius and Behold the Multiverse is just a better Glimmer most of the time. Being able to divide the payments can help with mana screw early game and late game it is just a solid card draw.
Bind the Monster - 2.5 - One of the better removal spells for Mono-Blue that I have seen. It is all right in Standard, but this card really shines in older formats where it will be a card that can be pitched to Force of Will or used as a Blue Swords to Plowshares.
Cosima, God of the Voyage - 2.5 - Cosima is such a sweet design! She won't be as good as you think in a control deck but she'll shine in a ramp deck, make sure to play Fabled Passage alongside our voyager friend.
Cosmos Charger - 2 - Cosmos Charger looks like it would be great with Foretell cards except it costs a way too much. You need to take your turn two and turn three off to cast this on turn three. That's just too much mana that early and by turn four+, it's still too much. You're better off just foretelling your cards normally.
Cyclone Summoner - 1 - Wat? This card is unplayable. That is way too much mana for just a 7/7 that bounces stuff. Just play a better finisher in your deck; play an ultimatum, pay one more mana and cast an Ugin and get rid of everything permanently. Cool card for Commander but not really for Standard.
Disdainful Stroke - 2 - Just an extremely solid counterspell that will see play in the Sideboard for bigger mana decks like Yorion or ramp decks. Always a welcome addition to a Blue mage's arsenal.
Glimpse the Cosmos - 3 - Anticipate with Flashback? Yea! I am about that, especially since Bonecrusher Giant is just an all-around excellent card. You do not even need to be running a bunch of Giants to get this card to Flashback. Bonecrusher Giant and Faceless Haven are two cards that are excellent Giants, if you have more Giants than Glimpse becomes even better. I would still try to fit at least one of these in my 4 Bonecrusher deck if I were playing Blue.
Graven Lore - 3.5 - Now THIS is a draw spell. Jace's Ingenuity eat your heart out. If a control deck casts this card anywhere near a stable board, they will severely have the upper hand. Scry 5, draw 3 is absurd.
Icebreaker Kraken - 2 - So, if we have six snow lands this thing still costs 6 mana. Also, when it comes into play it does not tap your opponent's stuff down, just stops them from untapping. Bad control finisher is bad, just play a better finisher.
Mystic Reflection - 2 - Fun card that can be used as a counterspell of sorts (turning that Ugin into a 1/1 creature) or as a finisher alongside things with haste or things that drain like Skemfar Shadowsage or Grey Merchant.
Orvar, the All-Form - 2.5 - The best anti discard card since Obstinate Baloth. Love it against Kroxa decks as even if you discard it on turn two, it can still copy a land you control at worst. Then when it is in play you can do some silly things with Mythos of Illuna or any targeted instant or sorcery spell.
Ravenform - 2 - If you do not have a great way to deal with huge creatures or annoying artifacts like The Great Henge or Embercleave, then you might want to consider Ravenform. It's a decent card in a control deck but it's not so good that you just jam four in your deck. I would play one or two in my control lists.
Reflections of Littjara - 2 - Untapping with this in a meta that has Elspeth Conquers Death and Binding the Old Gods? Good luck. Really sweet card in Commander and has a lot of jank potential but not really a tier one card in Standard.
Saw It Coming - 4 - As if Blue mages needed to be snarkier. Saw It Coming is an excellent counterspell because of the Foretell games you can play with it and because it can be returned with Niko Defies Destiny. |
