Welcome back, everyone. Yesterday we went over the White cards from Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty and today we will be going over the Blue cards. White did extremely well and looks to be very impactful. Let's see what Blue offers! But, before we start, let us go over how I'll be doing this set review.
I will not be going over cards that I believe will not see play in Standard and I will not be going over the Commander cards that will not see Standard play. For example, cards like Ancestral Katana and Golden-Tail Disciple will be omitted since they are just Limited cards and saying, "This is just a Limited card" repeatedly gets old rather fast. Do not worry though, I will be covering all the rare and mythic cards in the actual Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty set. So, if you like a certain rare or mythic, it will be mentioned in the review.
Keep in mind I'm rating all these cards for Standard playability. I will mention Modern applications if I believe the card has some.
Each card will be listed by color, then alphabetically by name.
Each card will be given a rating of 1-5. If a card would receive a 0, meaning it will see no play in that format ever, its rating is left off the list.
Rating | Explanation | Standard Examples
0 - Will never see play in this format (0 ratings are not listed).
1 - Unlikely to see play. (Divine Gambit)
2 - Could see fringe play, or occasional sideboard card. (Disdainful Stroke, Annul, Candletrap, Shadows' Verdict)
3 - Commonly played, staple in a single deck, or frequent play in several decks. (Righteous Valkyrie, Behold the Multiverse, Farewell)
4 - Format staples. Sees play in multiple decks, one of the best cards in the format. (Saw it Coming, Werewolf Packleader, Elite Spellbinder, Ranger Class)
5 - Format warping. If you are in these colors, you play that card or keep that card in mind when building decks. (Thalia, Guardian of Thraben, Hullbreaker Horror)
Now that we have that out of the way, let's begin!
Blue
Discover the Impossible - 2.5 - Three-mana Anticipate with some sweet upside. Love cards like this that reward you for building around them a little bit.
Disruption Protocol - 3.5 - Great in an artifact deck that has a lot of zero drops, or 1-drops. This is where I expect this one to see play, especially since Brother's War is around the corner.
Essence Capture - 2.5 - Just a solid card for Mono-Blue tempo decks, especially if we get some sort of Curious Obsession reprint.
Inventive Iteration - 2.5 - This card is wild, especially when it transforms. I do think 4 mana is a bit much though for what we are getting.
Invoke the Winds - 2.5 - A different Mind Flayer. You do not get the body, but you get the creature permanently. Maybe as a one of in your Izzet deck? Could work well with Galvanic Iteration. Quadruple Blue is a hard sell though. If this could grab planeswalkers, I would give it a three.
Jin-Gitaxias, Progress Tyrant - 3 - My first brew was with Jin and I can tell you, he's really good, especially at protecting himself, since most answers to him are instant or sorcery. He's great in a reanimator shell alongside Hulbreaker Horror or even Toxrill, the Corrosive.
Kairi, the Swirling Sky - 2 - I'm a fan of Imyrith over Kairi. Six-mana, sorcery speed is a lot and again, death triggers are not great on expensive permanents, especially not-Black ones.
March of Swirling Mist - 2.5 - Works amazingly well with Hinata, Dawn-Crowned. That is where I expect this card to see play the most. In a Hinata control shell.
Mindlink Mech - 2 - Fun brew around card but not really a good one for Constructed. Excited to see what people do with it though!
Mnemonic Sphere - 2 - Just a solid way to put cards in your graveyard or to trigger delirium with the Channel ability. I can see this seeing playing in Historic just to turn on Unholy Heat in control decks.
Moonsnare Prototype - 2.5 - A Blue Springleaf Drum without the colored mana. The Channel ability makes up for this a little bit. This card also curves well into Disruption Protocol.
The Reality Chip - 2 - Super sweet card and another that is great for Commander. Future Sight on an artifact creature is cool and will be fun to try out and see what we can do with it.
Reality Heist - 2 - If this grabbed non artifacts, I would rate it higher. For Standard you are better off sticking with Thirst for Knowledge.
Spell Pierce - 3 - Every time this card is in Standard its either a three or a four. It really depends on how good tempo decks are as this card is best in tempo decks. Control decks can use it too, but it really shines when you have a little bit of pressure.
Tameshi, Reality Architect - 2 - Another cool legendary creature that seems great for Commander but not so much Standard. Just takes too much time and mana to get going.
Tezzeret, Betrayer of Flesh - 3.5 - Excellent in a artifacts deck! Especially cool with Bankbuster, The Celestus, and Mirrorshell Crab.
Thirst for Knowledge - 3 - The original Thirst! Excellent card in an artifact set and we have another artifact set coming up in Brother's War. Just a solid card for reanimator, control, and artifact deck. |
Top 5 Blue Cards
- Tezzeret, Betrayer of Flesh
- Disruption Protocol
- Spell Pierce
- Thirst for Knowledge
- Jin-Gitaxias, Progress Tyrant
Blue got some sweet artifacts and artifact support, especially in Tezzeret and Disruption Porotocol. This makes cards like Portable Hole way more valuable, and you should see an uptick on those. Tomorrow we will be going over the Black and multicolored cards, you won't want to miss it!
