Check out the other installments!
White and Blue | Black and Lands | Red and Artifacts
We are almost done with my War of the Spark set review. We'll just have multicolored to go after today, let's go ahead and dive in but before we do, I'd like to go over my grading scale again.
Each card will be listed by color/guild, then alphabetically by name.
Each card will given a rating of 1-5. If a card would receive a 0, meaning it will see no play in that format ever, its rating is left off the list.
Rating - Explanation - Standard - Examples
0 - Will never see play in this format (Sphinx's Decree, Crafty Cutpurse (Most Rivals of Ixalan cards)).
1 - Unlikely to see play. (Amplifire)
2 - Could see fringe play, or occasional sideboard card. (Crushing Canopy, Disdainful Stroke)
3 - Commonly played, staple in a single deck, or frequent play in several decks. (Thought Erasure, Shock)
4 - Format staples. Sees play in multiple decks, one of the best cards in the format. (History of Benalia, Wilderness Reclamation)
5 - If you're in these colors, you should almost assuredly be playing that card. (Teferi, Hero of Dominaria)
2 - A little disappointing that this doesn't give the land trample, but maybe it's because Vitu-Ghazi is a peaceful creature. It's honestly better that it doesn't have trample as that could be pretty obnoxious to lose to as it is an instant speed spell. I don't really expect this card to see much play in Standard.
2.5 - A Green Anticipate that gains life. Nothing fancy but a very solid card to have access to for Green midrange decks or even planeswalker decks.
2 - This card is super sweet but it takes a little bit more to go off. You already need to have some counters, tokens w/counters, or planeswalkers to get the Sage rolling but when you do, it can quickly get out of hand.
2.5 - Double Green is huge compared to a single Green like Green Sun's Zenith. This card is fun but ultimately I think it costs a bit too much to see as much play as Green Sun's Zenith which was basically just a four off in every Green creature midrange deck while it was in Standard.
2 - Solid sideboard card for fliers, it's nice that it also gets rid of indestructible fliers or things like God-Eternal Kefnet.
2.5 - Rhonas is going to be awesome for Mono-Green and maybe even a Prime Speaker Vannifar deck (though I think Oketra will be better overall.) Curving Rhonas turn four from a Steel-Leaf Champion is a ton of damage that forces your opponent to wipe the battlefield or die next turn. The fact that Rhonas goes back into your deck gives a sort of inevitable, especially when paired with Vivien's Arkbow or Vivien, Champion of the Wilds.
3.5 - Mirari's Wake on a planeswalker that makes creatures is pretty absurd. Just playing Nissa sometimes is enough to empty your hand or do something absurd, untapping with her is surely lights out as long as you have something to cast.
2 - Nissa's Triumph is a nice way for some Green decks to skimp on lands and have more gas. It's also convenient that this set has a lot of great lands to grab with Nissa's Triumph if you control a Nissa planeswalker like, Mobilized District, Blast Zone, Arch of Orazca, Field of Ruin, etc.
2 - Paradise Druid is no Sylvan Caryatid and overall it's just worse than Incubation Druid since it dies to Goblin Chainwhirler and only has hexproof while it's untapped.
2 - Lots of abilities but it's not really doing much overall for 7 mana. It doesn't really affect the board state, more of a Sideboard card in my opinion if you want to gain a bunch of life in one go or to regrow some permanents.
2 - Proliferate on a 2-drop isn't super exciting but it's very cheap. Could easily slide into a tokens shell.
2 - Just a better Naturalize in most scenarios. A welcome addition to Green sideboards.
3 - Giving your creatures flash and protecting the creatures you grab off Vivien from hand disruption is solid. Any card that makes control a bit worse in Standard is a welcome addition.
2.5 - Vivien's Arkbow is a slow but has a powerful effect. I expect this card to see play as a one off in midrange creature decks or in the Sideboard against control and other grindy decks. The only problem with Vivien's Arkbow is that it kind of competes with Hydroid Krasis a little bit.
3 - I personally believe Karn, the Great Creator to be overall better than Karn, Scion of Urza and that's saying something. It could just be because Karn basically just casts Mastermind's Acquisition twice and still lives. I just love cards like this as it allows you to play cards you'd normally never play like Pharhelion II or Chaos Wand.
3 - Our boy Eugene is back! While he's not better than his eight cost version, that's okay. A plus ability that generates card advantage and protects Ugin is a fantastic ability and what all planeswalkers what. The fact that it's all in one ability is pretty crazy. His minus also kills almost any other opposing card while having a static ability that is busted in the right shell. We all know how powerful cost reduction can be. I'm excited to play with this card.
0 - Ugin's Conjurant has potential to get bigger than a 0/0 in your dreams. This card is just poop, Ugin should stick to building Hedrons and leave constructs to Karn. |
Top 5 Green and Colorless Cards
- Nissa, Who Shakes the World
- Ugin, the Ineffable
- Karn, the Great Creator
- Vivien, Champion of the Wilds
- Finale of Devastation
Wooo! Top four all go to planeswalkers. War of the Spark is living up to its name and expectations. All these walkers are great and not at all oppressive in my opinion. I'm excited to digitally sleeve these cards up in my Sol Ring sleeve on MTG Arena and planeswalk all over my enemies!
Make sure to tune in tomorrow where we wrap everything up with the multicolored cards from War of the Spark.
As always, thanks for reading,
