Welcome back, Vorthoses! As I am sure you are well aware, this past Sunday was Mother’s Day. If by some chance that last sentence reminded you about mother’s day, hurry up and use some of these cards to make her a deck and spend some time spell slinging with yo’ momma!
In honor of Mother’s Day I figured it only made sense to take a flavorful stroll across the multiverse in search of all the mothers Magic has to offer.
Alara
Alara gives us two motherly options; Dragon Broodmother presents a classic approach to reptilian motherhood, depicting a Dragon and her nest of hatchlings. This card offers a unique look into the lives of dragons on Jund, and the art feels like I paused an episode of Discovery Life: Alara. (with Sir David Attenborough narrating obviously!)
Magic is a game about combat, so we rarely get to see complex family structures represented on our cards. Brood Keeper gives us an endearing look into an adoptive mother on Jund. She has opted to care for this dragon egg, and will soon find herself to be a “mother of dragons”.
Dominaria
Dominaria presents us with four different views of motherhood, the first of which is the famed Mother of Runes. This cardboard depiction of a mother is about as close to my own as I will probably ever see, casually sipping tea while surrounded by her favorite books. The ability is also an extremely flavorful representation of a mother, going out of her way (tapping) to protect her children.
Brooding Saurian exemplifies another thematic game mechanic, a protective mother who will stop at nothing to ensure her children return to her side.
Goblin Matron offers an inside look at the lifestyle of the common Gob-Mom. Multitasking moms everywhere will appreciate her ability to look after the chillens while also cooking dinner.
Rayne, Academy Chancellor is our first Legendary mother, a woman who gave us the famous navigator of the Skyship Weatherlight.
Rath
Rath gives us two interesting takes on motherhood, the first of which is our second Legendary Mom. Sliver Queen is not just a mom, she is THE hive mother. Having given birth to countless sliver babies, the queen rules them all with an iron fist, er . . . slicer claw thing. She was also able to show compassion, allowing Karn to pass by unharmed.
Spike Hatcher gives a look at how the common Spike is birthed into existence. Fun.
Theros
Theros showcases another mom with her brood nest, this time in the form of a Hydra. I love these cards because they remind us even the most vicious, dangerous creatures on every plane still have families. Makes you think twice about hunting her down, no?
Kaladesh
Kaladesh showcased the origins of everyone’s favorite planeswalker, Chandra Nalaar. In those epic stories we learned of Chandra’s parents, including her mother Pia. Tragically, Pia lost her life while attempting to protect her daughter, but thankfully she was able to grace a card before meeting her end.
Kamigawa
The Orochi of Kamigawa offer an interesting take on motherhood, showcasing the Eggwatchers who take care of massive hatcheries across the plane. Orochi Eggwatcher is an especially odd version, as her goal is to have ten children so she can flip and start sacrificing them for power.
Tarkir
Atarka, Dromoka, and Kolaghan are each broodmothers in their own right. While dragons are not born or hatched in the traditional sense on Tarkir, these three dragonlords can still be thought of as mothers to the rest of their dragon broods.
Den Protector is probably my favorite mom on this list. She may have just had a baby, but she can still kick your butt.
Lorwyn / Shadowmoor
The goblins of Shadowmoor have moms who, in stark contrast with most mothers, raise their young gobs to be warriors and encourage them to conspire with one another and get into all sorts of mischief.
Serra’s Realm
The planeswalker Serra was the mother of an entire world. Serra's Realm was very much her baby, and it pained her greatly to see the world fall into the oily grasp of Yawgmoth’s Phyrexia.
Zendikar
The Eldrazi are so strange that it's hard to say for sure whether or not they exhibit parenting in any traditional sense, but we do have evidence of them giving birth . . . or spawning or whatever. So if you are looking for some form of alien birthing for your Mother’s Day decks, the Eldrazi have you covered.
New Phyrexia
New Phyrexia brought us the Birthing Pods and Phyrexian Vatmother who watches over them. Similar to the Eldrazi, these cards depict a strange form of motherhood. Maybe your mom’s favorite movie is Alien. If so, a deck of Phyrexians and Eldrazi would make a great gift from her little brood-spawn.
Un-known
I take it back. This is my mom, complete with her two goons for sons (Me and my brother Nate). I might just photoshop our faces onto this card's art and give it to her as a card. Magic card cards are the best cards, after all. Mom, if you are reading this. Happy Mothers Day!
Ulgrotha
And finally, we end on Ravi. I might be wrong, but I’m pretty sure this is the only grandmother in all of black border Magic. Not only that, but I believe she is the only planeswalker who is also a parent. I absolutely love the Baron’s quote on this card, as it offers a fantastic window into her personality as a character.
I hope you enjoyed this look at all of the mothers of Magic. Do you have a mom who plays Magic? Use this list and make her an extra flavorful deck. Think your mom would enjoy slinging spells of cardboard across the kitchen table? Sleeve up some Den Protectors and let her crack some skulls. Did I miss any of your own favorite mom-related cards? Post the m in the comments below.
And to all the #mtgmoms out there,
Happy Mother's Day!
