The Flowing Tower

Reddit

At Pro Tour Kaladesh, Dynavolt Tower was one of the more exciting breakout cards. Players utilized cheap cantrips and removal spells to charge up their tower, turning Harnessed Lightnings into Terminates and slowly setting up to use multiple towers to Lightning Bolt opponents out of the game. Since Pro Tour Kaladesh, we’ve seen occasional results from Dynavolt Tower builds, but the card has largely disappeared. In recent weeks, that’s changed somewhat, with some players pursuing Temur and even four-color builds, such as this one played by Raphael Levy:

Dynavolt Tower
This is a crazy deck simultaneously more midrangey and more controlling that previous iterations of the Dynavolt Tower deck. You have many more ways to play to the board and interact with opposing creatures since you’re playing great engine creatures like Rogue Refiner and Whirler Virtuoso. You even have a great blocker in Shielded Aether Thief that can help you keep energy and cards flowing in the midgame.

The bulk of the Blue and Red cards in this deck are pretty typical. You’ve got a good suite of Shocks and Harnessed Lightnings to deal with creatures, Anticipate and Glimmer of Genius to sculpt your gameplan heading into the mid and lategame, and counterspells to prevent anything from getting too far out of your control.

The reason to add Green to this deck is largely Attune with the Aether and Rogue Refiner. Rogue Refiner is a great card in the midgame to act as a speedbump while helping you continue hitting land drops and netting a burst of energy. Attune with the Aether accomplishes two important things. Firstly, it’s an incredible source of energy, particularly with one or more Dynavolt Towers in play. Secondly, it lets you trim some of your lands, yielding a higher density of spells as the game goes longer.

The real innovation in this build is the addition of White to the Temur Dynavolt Tower decks. White is what lets this deck try to play a very long game, since you gain access to Fumigate against creature decks and Quarantine Field to protect yourself against miscellaneous permanents and to exile recurring threats like Metalwork Colossus and vehicles, which can evade most other removal spells.
