Flayin' Alive

Reddit

Soulflayer is a very interesting card that we haven't seen a whole lot of since it was printed. It saw fringe play while it was in Standard alongside of Chromanticore, but besides that it's just not as efficient as Tasigur, the Golden Fang and Gurmag Angler. That said, there are an awful lot of creatures with keywords in Modern, and the payoff of a two-mana 4/4 with a ton of abilities isn't nothing. Surely there's a shell that can cast Soulflayer with enough abilities to make it worthwhile, right?

Soulflayer
If you're going to do something like this, you need your Soulflayers to be very consistent and to do an awful lot of work. You really want to have hexproof and indestructible so that Soulflayer doesn't die right away. Haste and double strike let you close out games quickly and lifelink makes it easier to win the race from behind. Sometimes you'll also need vigilance so that you can try to block down infect threats.

That's a lot of keywords that we need to try to find, all while ensuring consistent access to Soulflayer on the second or third turn of the game. Fortunately, Modern is a crazy format and we've got all kinds of awesome threats.

Bomat Courier is an incredible workhorse in this deck. If gives your Soulflayers haste while giving you a discard outlet, a way to dig for Soulflayer, and a way of enabling delirium for Traverse the Ulvenwald. Flamewake Phoenix gives you the option of either gaining flying and haste or having another threat or blocker on the turn that you resolve your Soulflayer. Sylvan Caryatid is preferable to Birds of Paradise because it gives you the potential to give Soulflayer hexproof. The two big winners are Drogskol Reaver and Zetalpa, Primal Dawn. These cards each give you multiple powerful keywords that make your Soulflayers incredibly difficult to interact with or race.

This deck seems like a fun and exciting way to play a voltron deck in Modern. You've got an incredibly fun plan of using Faithless Looting and Grisly Salvage to build a giant Soulflayer that's resilient to Path to Exile and other removal spells. That said, Lotleth Troll and Flamewake Phoenix do an okay job of beating down so that you won't just lose to the likes of Rest in Peace.
