Arcane Schemes

Reddit

There are few moments more exciting than looking at a deck and realizing that you have absolutely no idea what's going on. This Standard deck by Yuuka_Kazami is playing the craziest collections of cards that I've seen in quite some time, and I'm not really sure I've got it completely figured out. Let's take a closer look:

Unesh, Criosphinx Sovereign
When you see Unesh, Criosphinx Sovereign, you know that they mean business. The late game of this deck seems fairly obvious. You've got The Scarab God teaming up with Marionette Master and Tezzeret the Schemer to eke out lethal damage, as well as Unesh helping you bury your opponent in cards. In the mid game you've got some cards that aren't too surprising - Treasure Map to keep up on cards, as well as Fatal Push, Metallic Rebuke, and Vraska's Contempt for interaction - but what are all these fabricate cards and Metallic Mimics doing here?

There's some interesting engine-y kinds of things going on here. If you've got a hand that's heavy with Fabricate cards, early Metallic Mimics can name Servo to help you build up a board that's difficult for your opponent to break through. This is particularly true with some help from Treasures and Etherium Cells to help you play Mimics and a fabricate follow-up on the same turn. That said, that's not really what you're looking to do with your Mimics.

What you really want is to make everything into a Sphinx with Arcane Adaptation. Now we've got something crazy brewing. Suddenly all of your servos and all of your The Scarab God tokens are coming back with +1/+1 counters and netting you even more cards and continuing to stock your graveyard full of creatures to buy back.

Is this deck good? I have absolutely no idea. It's certainly doing something powerful, and has enough of an early game not to get completely run over. Tezzeret is an enormously powerful midgame engine that can easily turn into an overbearing endgame, and the combination of The Scarab God and Unesh is a powerful one. All in all, this seems like an exciting way to go over the top of opposing The Scarab God decks in Standard without going quite as far as Approach of the Second Sun.
