Modern is in a pretty exciting state in the wake of Aether Revolt. Fatal Push shakes up Black decks substantially, and the addition of Expertise spells to the format means that there’s all kinds of new and exciting things you can do with Fuse cards, Splits cards, and cards without mana costs like Restore Balance and Ancestral Vision. This week, Matt Sperling has a new take on the Expertise decks with a lot of creative interactions that make it somewhat more resilient. Let’s take a look:

This deck functions on the same principle as all of the other expertise decks. Brain in a Jar and various Expertise spells interact with the cheap half of Fuse spells, allowing you to choose to cast either half of the spell and even fuse them without paying their mana cost. With Kari Zev's Expertise in particular, you can cast Beck // Call as early as turn one or two with some help from Simian Spirit Guides.
This particular build of Expertise focuses on consistently putting a giant monster into play. You can either do this by using the more traditional engine of Goryo's Vengeance, or you can use Brain in a Jar or an Expertise Spell to fuse a Breaking // Entering. Both of these means allow you to put Emrakul into play without allowing its trigger to resolve.
In this deck, Beck // Call is more of a backup plan than anything else. However, that doesn’t mean that it’s not powerful enough to swing games in your favor. You can utilize Forbidden Orchard to net extra cards off of Beck or to give yourself a target for Kari Zev's Expertise. Resolving Beck // Call will generate a ton of cards and buy you enough time to put together a more game-ending combination of cards.
If you’re looking for a degenerate deck that has a lot of interesting interactions and flexibility, this is a deck with a substantial number of angles to attack from and a lot of cards for your opponent to play around. If you’re looking for a place to start pushing the Fuse decks to the limit, this seems like a good place to start.
