Of the cards from Eldritch Moon I was disappointed never to see in Standard, Take Inventory is definitely at the top of the list. Even with Jace, Vryn's Prodigy to power up the graveyard and provide extra copies of Take Inventory for three or four cards, the engine was just a little too clunky. Is there a chance that Kaladesh changes things up enough that Take Inventory has a chance?

There are two key cards that Kaladesh adds to the mix that make something like this possible. The first card is Dynavolt Tower. This gives you an efficient way to generate interaction with some of the nothing that this deck does in the early game. All you’re looking to do is use Galvanic Bombardment and Harnessed Lightning to control the first few turns of the game while you get a Dynavolt Tower online. From then on, all of your Anticipates, Take Inventorys, and Drag Unders are fine value plays that also generate fractions of Lightning Bolt to help you not fall further behind.

The other exciting card that Kaladesh brings to the table is Metallurgic Summonings. This is a card that does a lot of interesting things in a deck packed with cheap instants. This is a card that lets you start turning the corner against any number of decks in a couple of ways. Firstly, you can cast it late in the game along with a cheap instant or two to help stabilize the board. From that point on, chains of card drawing spells help to ensure you have enough blockers to stay alive and start trading off with opposing creatures. And if your opponent ever lets you build up a real board presence, you can just rebuy all of your Take Inventorys and such to trigger Dynavolt Tower and just bury your opponent in cards.

This deck is going to run into problems if early interaction isn’t relevant. You lean a lot on Galvanic Bombardment and Dynavolt Tower being relevant interaction, which is true in a format defined by Collected Company and Reflector Mage, but not so much in a format of Siege Rhinos, Archangel Avacyn, and Noxious Gearhulk. However, if there’s not a high density of high toughness threats, Harnessed Lightning does a great job of taking those out thanks to excess energy from Dynavolt Tower. If the deck needs more than that, it’s possible that Lightning Axe could tag in to help.

All in all, this is an exciting engine that I can’t wait to see in action. It certainly helps that there’s flexibility in how the deck is built too. It’s not obvious whether the deck wants Thing in the Ice or Goblin Dark-Dwellers, or if you try to do madness tricks with Tormenting Voice, Fiery Temper, and more. There are lots of options, and I hope we get to see them explored in the new Standard format.
