Today on DailyMTG.com, Trick Jarrett revealed the contents of Duel Decks: Heroes vs Monsters. From what we've seen of Theros so far, we know that there's going to be strong ties to Greek mythology - namely gods, heroes, and monsters. With this Duel Deck, we're getting a closer look at the flavor of Theros, as well as the actual cards and mechanics.
The Monster deck is a Green-Red deck built around, you guessed it, giant monsters. It also showcases the Theros card Polukranos, World Eater with the monstrosity mechanic. Monstrosity refers to an ability which can only be activated if the creature is not monstrous. As part of the resolution of the ability, the creature becomes monstrous. So it's effectively a one-shot ability that absolutely dominates the board and is absolutely terrifying to face down. One thing's for sure; Monstrosity is something you're going to be facing down a lot of at your Commander tables!
The Hero deck is a White-Red aggro deck, built around aggressive humans. The Hero in this deck is a Legendary creature - Anax and Cymede. Anax and Cymede are aggressively costed to start with, but also demonstrate the heroic mechanic from Theros: whenever you cast a spell that targets them, their heroic ability triggers, giving your creatures +1/+1 and trample until end of turn. The heroic ability fits right into this aggressive deck, but leaves us wondering what other kinds of abilities could fit onto heroic triggers.
Take a look at Polukranos, Anax and Cymede, and other previews from Theros below, as well as the full decklists from Duel Decks: Heroes vs Monsters. This product will be released on September 6, so be sure to pick yours up and get your first taste of Theros
