McClain takes Detroit

Reddit

1,432 players showed up in Detroit to play Modern. This format has proven itself to be very diverse, with a huge number of viable decks across multiple archetypes. In the last few premier level events, we've seen a huge amount of UWR Control and Jund variants, but also decks like GW Hexproof that aim to attack these decks from an angle they aren't prepared for. Are we going to see the same decks policing the format or will something new rise to the top?

After the first day, we saw nothing but Black-Green and Jund on top of the standings, including notable players like Ben Stark, Josh Utter-Leyton, and Reid Duke. 182 players came back to battle for the title on Day Two, but in the end only eight players make the cut. Five variants of Black-Green and Jund made the top eight, including Reid Duke, Willy Edel, and Ben Stark in the Top 8. Additionally, Josh Utter-Leyton, Brian Kibler, Lucas Siow, David Caplan, and Owen Turtenwald just missed the cut and ended up in the Top 16.

In the end, it was Josh McClain and his Melira Pod deck that took down the event, battling through both Ben Stark and Reid Duke on his way to the title.

Congratulations to Josh McClain, champion of Grand Prix Detroit.
