The Article I Should've Called "Mine"

Reddit

Wrexial, the Risen Deep
I wrote an article called “Mine” a month ago and it was a fun article to write. I don’t know how you all felt about the deck we ended up with, but I think we can all agree that using Wrexial, the Risen Deep to get up in their grill and start using their own stuff against them is about as 75% as it gets. “Mine” refers to using their spells as your own and using the rest of your deck to take control of their spells and creatures to make what’s theirs, yours. All things considered, “Mine” was a great title for that article. It seemed like the play at the time. I really didn’t expect to regret calling it that a mere month later. Why do I wish I could still use that title?

Well, Conspiracy 2: Conspire Harder has a card that made me instantly brew a deck mentally that made me wish I could call this article “Mine.” Do you think you know that card I mean? I’m sure you do. I mean, you saw the picture as soon as you opened the article. Even as you read this, the card is clearly visible in your periphery. Should I even . . .  it’s Leovold. The card’s Leovold. You ruined it. You looked ahead and the big reveal is ruined. I’m not mad, just disappointed.

First of all, this guy is in great colors for stealing their stuff. If they try to disenchant your Treachery or bounce their creature to get it back, you get to draw cards. He’s very well suited for stealing their creatures. Also, they can’t draw extra cards so if you play Howling Mine effects, you draw extra and they don’t. Get it? DO YOU GET IT?! Mine, mine. Mine plus mine. How perfect would it have been to call this article “Mine”? Literally perfect. Literally. I’m really disappointed in myself. I got mad at you earlier for peeking at Leovold earlier, but I think we can all tell it’s myself I’m really disappointed in for wasting a title that applied so much better to this one because we got a literal Howling Mine hoser.

Consecrated Sphinx
While we’re being all 75% about it, stealing stuff is cool, but are we breaking one of our “rules” by playing Leovold? Specifically, the one that says it’s better to punish our opponents for doing things than to prevent them from doing things? If you think that’s the case, let’s think about what we’re actually preventing them from doing. We’re preventing them from running away with the game with Consecrated Sphinx. We’re preventing them from drawing their deck with Azami, Lady of Scrolls and winning with Lab Maniac. We’re preventing them from discouraging us to play a lot of spells because they have Rhystic Study. The original intent behind that guideline was “Don’t counter 100% of the spells your girlfriend tries to play until she hates playing with you so much she literally cries” based on a Talrand, Sky Summoner deck I tuned up during the first year this column ran. Don’t Armageddon everyone’s land with no plan to kill them, don’t do some sort of combo with Knowledge Pool and Curse of Exhaustion so they can’t play any spells, etc. We’re preventing them from drawing extra cards, which isn’t exactly oppressive. We’re also punishing them for running Phyrexian Arena, so I feel like we’re in the right here. It’s important to revisit our guiding principles from time to time to make sure they’re still relevant or we’re not being pulled too far off course, but this is a non-issue. In order to win, we’ll have to do things to our opponents and there are far worse things we can do than bury them in card advantage.

What kind of card advantage? How do we plan to win? Like many 75% decks, I like the idea of killing them with their own creatures and spells so there will be a heavy focus on those sort of shenanigans. For example, it isn’t often that we get to brew a 75% deck with Villainous Wealth and I’m going to take full advantage. A few Planeswalkers to keep up ahead will be a welcome addition considering our Planesalkers are safer than most, given our commander discouraging them from targeting our permanents by threatening to draw us cards. A bunch of mine effects that only we’ll benefit from including the brutal combination of Leovold and Teferi's Puzzle Box round the deck out nicely.

What would a deck like this look like?

Mine ? Commander | Jason Alt

Jace's Archivist
This looks like a blast to play. It’s on the expensive side of decks we have built with all of the Planeswalkers but I think it will be worth it when you see how much fun you have playing it. I included a lot of Windfall effects because if your commander survives and they resolve, you Mind Twist everyone. I don’t think this is unfair for a 75% deck and they’re going to have ample time to remove your commander in response. You’re basically baiting them to do it — if they do you draw cards and if they don’t, you pants the table. Puzzle Box is just too good with Leovold, and Jace's Archivist and even stuff like Seizan, Perverter of Truth will affect them disproportionately and give you card advantage. It doesn’t do much to the board, so you will need to play well to win. As much as the card disadvantage will annoy them, they can still make plays and they are likely all gunning for you after you wheel everyone and they only draw one card.

You have a decent suite of theft spells. I tried to find some more room but I am running more land here than I normally run. I could see cutting one basic for Thada Adel, Acquisitor or something like that. Since Wrexial stole the name “Mine” that would have been perfect for this deck, maybe we jam Wrexial in this deck. Find room where you care to. Treachery, Control Magic, Dragonlord Silumgar and other effects like that should help deal with their board in the best way possible — beating them to death with their own dudes. Stripping their hand so they can’t replace the creatures you steal is just a smart way to do business.

Misdirection
Sultai colors are perfect for spot removal and I included more of this than I normally do. I also decided to take a hint from some of the other people brewing with Leovold and include some swerve effects. Misdirection and Willbender are going to be a lot of fun to use. They target Leovold with Hero's Demise, you draw a card when they target him then you Misdirect the spell to one of their creatures and laugh at them. These effects are underused in EDH, probably because a Counterspell could occupy that same slot and be almost as effective against targeted spells but also have the additional utility of being able to stop spells like Insurrection and Damnation. I’m not saying it’s a better idea to run Misdirection, it isn’t. It’s just more fun and that’s what I’m about.

The deck is pretty self-explanatory and I think it’s a good shell for you to customize. The important points are that I didn’t run tutors, because I basically never do; and, also, you’re drawing so many cards and they’re drawing so few you should just get what you need naturally. I am confident you will be able to execute your plan better than they are. Steal their creatures, don’t tutor too much, don’t prevent them from doing anything (besides drawing extra cards) and beat them in the face until they stop twitching. Leovold is one of the most exciting commanders I have seen in a while and we’ve had some very good ones recently.

What do we think? Any glaring omissions or questionable inclusions? Leave me some love in the comments section! I know you people are reading this series, so don’t forget to comment! As always, thanks for reading and we’ll be back next week.
