When it comes to big baddies, Nicol Bolas is definitely Magic: The Gathering's version of Thanos. At the center of War of the Spark was Nicol Bolas, Dragon-God, a very powerful planeswalker that struggled to find a home.
Well, if only there was a midrange deck in Explorer/Pioneer that was looking for a way to gain an edge in the mirror and against other fair decks, while also picking up some counterspells in the board against control and combo decks...
Oh wait, there is!

An undefeated run, not too bad!
Both Bolases did a great job in the midrange role that the deck laid out for them, providing card advantage and board control, while the addition of blue also opens up the door for sideboarded counterspells which is huge in control and combo matchups. One of the big problems midrange decks can have is decks that have a gameplan that tries to go over the top of the normal midrange removal and two for ones plan, and counterspells like Negate and Disdainful Stroke are a great way to handle that.
