The Best Value Commanders

Reddit

Rare is the Magic: the Gathering player who dislikes visiting Value Town. For commander players, value can easily be made accessible by running a legendary creature that provides impactful abilities soon as they are summoned from the command zone.

But first, let's narrow down what value is in the context of this article.

A value commander is a creature (sometimes Planeswalker) that gives advantages through different stages of a game. They can either generate resources, card advantage, or directly contribute to your deck's win condition.

Here are X legendary creatures that are Value Town royalty.

Atraxa, Praetor's Voice

Atraxa, Praetors' Voice

Okay, let's get ol' Atraxy out of the way. Perhaps the most (in)famous commander in the 100-deck world and consistently holding the most number of decks built in various Magic deckbuilding website, this four-mana Angel Horror is one of a kind.

For four mana, Atraxa has flying, vigilance, deathtouch, and lifelink on a 4/4 body. But keyword soup does not equate to value directly. It's this Phyrexian's other ability that puts her over the top. On your end step, you get to proliferate once. This means that you get (almost) immediate value during the turn you cast her and each turn after that.

There are a couple of ways to build Atraxa, and yes, most tables already know the telltale signs of what version an Atraxa deck is.

A Planeswalkers-themed Atraxa deck can run all the best walkers form its colors: Vraska, Betrayal's Sting, Liliana, Dreadhorde General, Elspeth, Sun's Champion ... the list goes on. But, there's few commanders that works with walkers as well as Atraxa as she ticks them all up once per turn. Add Ichormoon Gauntlet, Oath of Teferi, and The Chain Veil and you're sure to out-value your opponents.

The other way to run Atraxa is with an Infect build. Phyrexia: All Will Be One brought a lot of spells that poisoned all opponents at once: Vraska's Fall, Infectious Bite, and Prologue to Phyresis all need to resolve once and Atraxa can take care of the rest.

The Ur-Dragon

The Ur-Dragon

One of the more divisive mechanics in commander is eminence as it gives you an advantage without needing to cast your commander at all. There are only several commanders with eminence, The Ur-Dragon is without a doubt the king of value.

All dragon spells are discounted by one mana regardless of where this Dragon Avatar is. So, despite costing a whopping nine mana, you already get the benefits thanks to eminence. Being a five color commander also allows you to run basically all the best cards in all colors.

This 10/10's other ability (when this king of dragons is on the battlefield) is to draw you cards equal to the number of dragons attacking. And if that's not enough, you also get to put a permanent card onto the field for free!

Take all your ramp cards because harnessing draconic power is as expensive as it gets even with Ur-Dragon's discount. We're talking Farseek, Three Visits, Arcane Signet, Chromatic Lantern. Given the dragon theme, you can also run Lapis Orb of Dragonkind and Jade Orb of Dragonkind to get additional value.

Scour the skies for all the best wyrms like Tiamat, Atarka, World Render, Utvara Hellkite, and another commander all-star: Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm.

When theUr-Dragon starts its draconic dance, dominating a game through value is in short order.

Omnath, Locus of Creation

Omnath, Locus of Creation

What's one action that all Magic players do? Why, play lands of course! Lands power your spellcasting and is always a welcome resource ... unless you're flooding heavily that is. Enter, Omnath, Locus of Creation. This four mana and four color commander (everything except black) is a 4/4 that does four things.

When Omnath enters, he draws you a card. Being in blue and white means this is open to being abused with cards like Ephemerate and Ghostly Flicker in a pinch. But, its his Landfall abilities that bring the value train.

The first landfall trigger gives you four life, the second adds Red, Green, White, and Blue mana to your mana pool, and the last trigger deals four to each opponent and their planeswalkers. So, he draws you cards, gives you life, ramps you, domes players in the head, and can potentially wipe out planeswalkers. Whew.

To maximize the value, you need the ability to play multiple lands per turn. Azusa, Lost but Seeking, Mina and Denn, Wildborn, Dryad of the Ilysian Grove, and Oracle of Mul Daya are creatures with an Exploration ability.

One time ramp spells such as Harrow and Entish Restoration can trigger Landfall multiple times. And speaking about doubling triggers, Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines plays extremely well with Omnath.

Stack your deck with Landfall rockstars Rampaging Baloths, Avenger of Zendikar, and Scute Swarm and the value town (and your opponents) will be overrun with tokens.

Muldrotha, the Gravetide

Muldrotha, the Gravetide

Necromancy in Magic means graveyard recursion and in this realm of death, Muldrotha, the Gravetide leads the pack.

This 6/6 Sultai Elemental Avatar lets you play multiple cards from your graveyard during your turn. The only restriction is that you can only play a permanent of one type each time you do so. So, potentially, as long as you have the mana you can play a land, a creature, an enchantment, a planeswalker, an artifact, and a battle.

In a Muldrotha deck, you'd want to run card effects that are typically found in instants or sorceries so that you can reuse them from the graveyard. The Seal cycle is perfect for this, Seal of Primordium, Seal of Doom, and Seal of Removal being the top choices. Card draw stapled onto creatures are best too: Mulldrifter, Baleful Strix, and River Kelpie are your shoo-ins.

Gravebreaker Lamia and Sidisi, Undead Vizier are repeatable tutors that are welcome in any Muldrotha deck. And to keep your graveyard nice and healthy, new cards Ripples of Undeath and Six lets you mill yourself to get more options.

Sacrifice outlets do double duty and the best ones are Greater Good and Altar of Dementia. But if you're looking for ultimate yard filling in one turn? Hermit Druid is your dude.

The Gravetide doesn't overwhelm opponents quick like a tidal wave, but in a long game, there's no other commander I'd put my mana on than Muldrotha.

Value Town Candidates

Having a legendary creature in the command zone at your beck and call that gives you big value is a huge advantage. In multiplayer formats like commander, it is more difficult to truly predict what may happen on the next turns. Eking out incremental value from your commander's abilities is one of the most efficient ways to be prepared to take the win.
