The first three weeks of the Pauper Premiere League, sponsored by CoolStuffInc.com and Wizards of the Coast, are officially in the books! These three weeks represent the first rotation of players. Now that we've seen every one of our players play one night, we're once more shuffling them up and having them play against a whole new bunch of players.
In case you missed the games, you can find replays for all three weeks here:
From here on out we're going to talk about just what ended up happening, including player match results by the end. As a result, a spoiler alert is in effect from here on for those who may not want to know the results until they're able to watch the above videos.
Week One
- Michael Bonde: Orzhov Pestilence
- Alex Ullman: Goblins
- Andreas Petersen: Affinity
- Evan Erwin: Izzet Delver
Our very first week running this league was a doozy. Right off the bat we went hard and heavy as we saw Andreas' Affinity list destroy Evan's faeries and Delvers. Unfortunately for Evan, the cards just weren't in it for him over the course of the night. The mulligans were rough and were no match for hard hitters like the aforementioned Affinity and Goblins.
Speaking of Goblins, Alex's list was no joke and gave everyone a run for their money. The best moment, though, was almost certainly when playing against Michael Bonde's Pestilence list where Alex was able to line up a perfect killing blow through a Circle of Protection: Red and, well, see for yourself.
It's a no brainer that going forward Goblin Grenade is going to be a force to be reckoned with in the format and Alex showed off why in spectacular fashion. The only time the deck struggled was against Andreas' Affinity list, as numerous 4/4s are often much better than a similar number of 2/2s.
At the very end of the night, we finished with one heck of a final matchup: Andreas and Michael. For those unaware, both of them play for the same team: Mage. As such, this was a hotly anticipated matchup. Andreas was favored from a matchup perspective going in. Amazingly, though, Michael was able to pull it off and emerge victorious from this spectacular battle between teammates!
Week one results:
- Michael Bonde: 2-1
- Andreas Petersen: 2-1
- Alex Ullman: 2-1
- Evan Erwin: 0-3
Week Two
- Kendra Smith: Elves
- Joseph Hourani: Azorius Familiars
- Brian Coval: Sultai Teachings
- Ricardo Mattana: Snow Boros
Week two kicked off with a bang! Joseph Hourani (better known online by his Magic Online handle, 420dragon) and I did battle between his Familiars deck and my elves. Fortunately for me, my elves proved to be a bit too explosive for Joseph to handle. Game 1 he had a Stonehorn Dignitary but was unable to find a way to flicker it while Game 2 had a way for me to deal direct damage to his face.
The one deck that got people really talking, however, was Brian's Sultai Teachings list. Both myself and Ricardo grinded him down until we could grind no more and it really showed the power of what a dedicated Teachings deck could do given the time to go off. Unfortunately it couldn't stand up to Joseph's Familiars combo, but it still did well and got the attention of many a player.
Finally, Ricardo showed up and gave Joseph and myself all kinds of trouble, fighting us back by taking to the skies before either of us knew what was coming. He ultimately ended up falling to Brian's Teachings deck. Boros likes to play the long game and it just so happens that Teachings has a much better late game plan than Boros, thus ending up highly favorable for Brian.
Week two results:
- Brian Coval: 2-1
- Ricardo Mattana: 2-1
- Joseph Hourani: 1-2
- Kendra Smith: 1-2
Week Three
- Emma Partlow: Mono-Blue Delver
- Chris VanMeter: Burn
- Adam Yurchick: Astro Jeskai
- Brian DeMars: Mono-Black Control
Week three featured a much more unusual setup than normal. Typically, we shuffle up the players to give a good balance between them. This time, however, one of our players - Brian DeMars - had to be finished with enough time to go take on Mythic Championship IV at Barcelona! He did so excitedly and even stated that he was more excited to play this great format of commons than battle back the Hogaak menace at the Mythic Championship.
While he wasn't as excited about the Arisen Necropolis, he still piloted Mono-Black in spectacular fashion, showing what a ton of removal and some Gray Merchants can pull off. Best of all, he did it all in three back-to-back rounds. While he didn't commentate this past week due to the event prep happening, you can definitely expect to see him this Thursday!
Chris VanMeter jammed constant favorite amongst players - Burn. His goal was to go upstairs with as many bolts as possible, and against both Brian and Emma, it certainly paid off in spades. Much like Evan's Izzet variant in week one, however, Emma's deck just couldn't stand up to the lists the other players brought to the table. Both Burn and Mono-Black Control deal with the creatures just as well as the life total, while Jeskai grinds it out for eternity.
It was with that grindy midrange strategy, though, that Adam was able to take the first 3-0 victory among the initial first three weeks! As of now, he seems to be the clear favorite, and the only player live for the coveted 6-0 finish in the Swiss matches. Will he be able to make it, or will he succumb and face off against multiple players in the playoffs that begin in just a few short weeks?
Week three results:
- Adam Yurchick: 3-0
- Chris VanMeter: 2-1
- Brian DeMars: 1-2
- Emma Partlow: 0-3
Now we start our new rotation. This week we have four more amazing rounds to go with the following players:
- Brian DeMars on Stompy
- Alex Ullman on Golgari Aristocrats
- Brian Coval on Skyfisher Tron
- Andreas Petersen on Bogles
As you may have noticed, we switched around a couple players for this week. Due to a scheduling issue, Brian Coval requested to play an earlier date instead of playing on August 15th. Ricardo Mattana stepped up to the plate and will be playing on that date in his place.
As usual, the full decklists will be posted tomorrow afternoon right here on CoolStuffInc.com! Make sure you tune in Thursday at 9PM EST to check out all the action and follow the CoolStuffInc Twitch page to keep up to date on when the channel goes live.
This week I won't be able to help commentate on the stream itself, as I'll be in GenCon for the week! I'll be helping out at the various CoolStuffInc.com booths so make sure to stop by and say hey! In the meantime, we have something special for this week: a guest host! Who do you think it will be? Find out as we announce it tomorrow!
