Every good player should be honest with themselves. We all have flaws. Finding those flaws and working towards fixing them is how we get better. Today I am admitting to a flaw.
I lack commitment to a deck. I've been stewing an idea that I think is tech for months now. In fact I got the idea Christmas Day. That is a really long time for me to work on something. Typically I just write an article about a new deck idea. Play it once or twice. Then ditch it for the next big thing. About the time I run out of casual ideas another expansion comes out and I'm off to the races again.
Right now it is Friday the 12th and I have my only PTQ that I can attend this Extended season is tomorrow. You won't be reading this until after the tournament has transpired. The reason I write this now is to expose my tech to you as promised and commit myself to my deck. You see if I were to crash and burn tomorrow I could just keep writing about other stuff and you the reader would never know I failed. Sure some of you would catch that I hadn't written the deck up as promised but most would never fault me or even call me out on it. So I am going to write this today and send it in to Trick well ahead of my deadline just so I know that I have extended myself and committed to the deck.
So what's the deck and where's the tech? For that I'm going to go a little backwards from normal. I'm starting with the sideboard. You'll understand eventually.
2 Relic of Progenitus – This 4 slots are for my worst match up. Living End decks. I actually like the Relics better since I can draw a card when I empty a graveyard and multiples aren't as worthless. Ironically I had planned on this being four Relics but all my students had grabbed up the Relics from my sharing box. Besides sometimes you don't want to hold the mana back just to be ready to Relic a graveyard so the Tormods have their uses.
1 Crime//Punishment – Used for Punishment more than Crime. 2 mana can blow up Affinity's entire mana base or an entire swarm of Thopters. You have to make sure it comes out to your advantage since your cards get hit as well. The Crime does happen against Slow Zoo builds as I can blow up their Walletslayer with other cards and take it for good with Crime.
1 Vexing Shusher – Just there for Blue loving mages. Mostly Fae decks.
1 Wheel of Sun and Moon – A major snag for Dredge, Living End, and Thopter Foundry.
1 Rise//Fall – Against Zoo this is most effective. Bouncing their best dude and getting one of my own back often tips the game in my favor.
1 Gaddock Teeg – Scapeshift doesn't work so well and it draws their limited removal away from my real muscle.
1 Meddling Mage – General Hoser.
1 Jund Charm – Effective Vs. Elves and Graveyard abusers.
1 Firespout – Basically against Brozek, Elves, and most of Zoo this is a Wrath of God.
1 Rhox War Monk – Tips the scales in the Zoo match up.
1 Bant Charm – Probably the most Versatile card in Extended right now.
1 Thought Hemorrhage – Pretty much there to destroy and combo plans.
After seeing that sideboard you're probably thinking I'm pretty crazy. Your first question should be how can your mana support all those cards. Well let's look at the mana base next.
[cardlist]1 Verdant Catacombs
1 Misty Rainforest
2 Scalding Tarn
4 Marsh Flats
4 Arid Mesa
1 Plains
1 Forest
1 Hallowed Fountain
1 Temple Garden
1 Steam Vents
1 Sacred Foundry
1 Stomping Ground
1 Godless Shrine[/cardlist]
Now you can see that my mana is able to easily handle all the sideboard requirements. But now if you've read my articles for long you might be asking about probability. How and Why am I running so many 1 of's in my board? Sure, for many of the current common Meta decks I have multiple sideboard cards my chances of drawing them are still minimal. This is where the tech comes in. Notice that a vast majority of my sideboard is Multicolored cards. Any Guesses?
That's the tech. In game one I have access to multiple cards that many decks hate to see and I get to chose which I use.
The rest of the deck is a Domain Zoo build. I figure that Zoo has fighting chances in every match up and the Wish is the card that will bring it back to the forefront. At least that's my plan. We'll see. Next week I'll have a tourney report so you can all smile with me or laugh at my failure.
For Final Reference here is the total list.
