I noticed there were posters up and trailers running for Sorcerer's Apprentice the movie while I was attending Pro Tour San Juan. I asked Paul Levy, one of the Brand Managers for Magic about them at the event. His answer was a "We're doing some cross promotion with them. I'll tell you more later."
After the event we emailed him asking for further information about the cross promotions. Our email went unanswered and we did not follow up.
Tonight Brian David-Marshall tweets the following:
Magic The Gathering appearance in The Sorceror's Apprentice. The kid behind me was more excited by that then seeing Nic Cage in person. #mtg
I had guessed that the cross promotion was a commercial or trailer running before the movie, perhaps something inspired by the FNM puppet short that Wizards tested to its online audience. We don't know for sure what the appearance is, if it is more than a cameo in the movie, but expect more explanation soon.
Update: Googling has revealed an interview with Jon Turtletaub (director of the movie) with a brief mention of the Magic: The Gathering product placement. Read more

Update: BDM tweets what the product placement is in the movie.
@misterorange Sadly there are no kids playing Magic in the movie -- just a promo standup for Magic prominently featured in a key scene.
