Summer is in full swing, and most of the Magic: The Gathering community is doing what it does best: avoiding the sun. I mean seriously . . . it’s hot. Give me an air-conditioned living room, a local game store, a den, or something, some boosters of Magic 2014 Core Set, and I’m good to go. Let’s see what sort of community treasures I found while burning up this week.
Life Support
The Magic: The Gathering offerings in 2013 have been insane: Dragon’s Maze, Modern Masters, and now Magic 2014 Core Set. Players everywhere have been holding funerals for wallets, bank accounts, and poor little smashed piggy banks. Theros hasn’t even hit yet! With the recent speculation that Elspeth will probably be appearing in Theros, I am sure that Magic players everywhere are digging in their couch cushions for any spare change.
Unusual Table
I’ve talked about how cats love attention and Magic: The Gathering. It seems that this kitty was bothered that no one was paying attention to it. So, it decided to do something about it. I don’t have a problem with people using the kitty as a table; I am just worried about when the cat decides it’s had enough and gets up to move. Then, the whole table state is ruined! Take my advice: Sedate the kitty to ensure it doesn’t move.
Real-World Forest
Apparently, there’s this whole thing called “the outside,” and to be honest, it doesn’t sound that great. Wind, rain, snow, the sun . . . It just sounds like it could ruin any Magic game I would be playing. This photo shows that a Magic: The Gathering Forest might have been inspired by this real-world location. I’m not sure where this is, but it’s pretty beautiful. I might have to give this whole “outside” thing a try one day . . . after some more games of Magic of course.
Time for M14 Sealed
This past weekend was the Magic 2014 Core Set prerelease, and there are plenty of discussions about it. You’ll see more tweets a little later in my article. For now, let’s look at this interesting setup: an Adventure Time play mat (which wins points already because you know my love for Adventure Time) and Pokémon sleeves. I have to admit that if I sat down across from this player, I would be confused about what game I am playing. Maybe that’s his or her plan. Maybe he or she is trying to confuse the opponents. In that case, I salute you and your mind games.
Yin and Yang Selesnya
Magic tattoos aren’t a new thing within the community. It fascinates me to see the different types of tattoos people have to represent their connections to the game. Based on the yin and yang philosophy, this Imgur user’s tattoo represents two favorite colors in a beautiful dance of give and take. While not generally known as enemy colors, the tattoo represents a perfect flow of opposites.
Not Dead Yet
When two of the most powerful forces in Magic need to take a break, this is how I imagine they do it: a casual game that ends in a comical way. I’m not spoiling the whole comic for you—you can click on the source to see the outcome. Let’s just say that this is a great little comic, and I enjoyed it quite a bit.
Send Magic Cards
I was never able to experience a summer camp. But I’ve lived through the ’80s, so everything I needed to learn I learned from television and movies. This young camper has sent quite the note home to Mom and Dad. There is so much about this note that I love. Mainly the line, “I’m not dead.” I mean, if you’re going to write a letter home, you might as well put everyone at ease by letting them know your mortal status. I just hope the kid isn’t disappointed when he receives nothing but David Blaine tricks in his care packages.
