Variations on Selesnya in MAT Standard

Reddit

Hello everyone. The Selesnya Conclave is the Green/White guild on Ravnica. The guild involves itself with establishing and maintaining peace and unity. It's a color combination that I enjoy playing. While the normal tenets of Green/White decks feature things such as creating creature tokens and adding +1/+1 counters to their creatures, as you'll see, there are other facets to them that you can build around in Standard. Let's get started with a couple of typical Selesnya decks.

Selesnya Counters

The first deck I have for you features gaining +1/+1 counters on its journey to victory. Let's take a look at the deck.

Ozolith, the Shattered Spire
Gaining +1/+1 counters is the name of the game for this deck. Ozolith, the Shattered Spire helps with this by providing a means of getting a +1/+1 counter, plus adding extra counters when they are placed on artifacts or creatures you control. You can also gain +1/+1 counters with the backup ability found on both Enduring Bondwarden and Doomskar Warrior. These +1/+1 counters help you trigger the training ability found on Hopeful Initiate, helping it to gain additional +1/+1 counters. Both planeswalkers in this deck also have the ability to provide +1/+1 counters to your creatures. Dusk Legion Duelist is a great target for these counters, as it will allow you to draw an extra card when it gets its first +1/+1 counter each turn.

Botanical Brawler might only be an uncommon, but it serves a very important role in this deck. By pairing it alongside the flipside of Invasion of Gobakhan, Lightshield Array, you can gain a ton of +1/+1 counters each turn. Since Botanical Brawler has trample, it can often attack and still deal damage to your opponent, even when faced with blockers. To help protect it, you can use the activated ability of Skrelv, Defector Mite, which provides hexproof and unblockability to a color.

Selesnya Tokens

Next, I have a deck that goes wide by creating lots of creature tokens. Let's check it out.

Join the Dance
Wedding Announcement // Wedding Festivity
Skrelv's Hive

Creating creature tokens is the plan with this deck, and it includes multiple ways of doing this. Join the Dance, Wedding Announcement // Wedding Festivity, and Skrelv's Hive are all noncreature spells that will help you create creature tokens. All of them provide multiple tokens, and will either stay on the battlefield, providing a benefit each turn, or can be cast multiple times, thanks to flashback. Resolute Reinforcements is a creature you can cast that will bring along a Soldier token when it comes into play. All of these become even better while you have a copy of Mondrak, Glory Dominus on the battlefield, as you'll double the number of tokens you will create.

In addition to going wide, this deck does attempt to make your creatures bigger in multiple ways. Wedding Festivity provides a +1/+1 bonus to all of your creatures. Lightshield Array provides actual +1/+1 counters to creatures that have attacked. King Darien XLVIII and Intrepid Adversary both provide additional bonuses to your creatures. King Darien XLVIII also offers you the means of creating additional creature tokens as well. Finally, Sigarda, Champion of Light provides a boost to your Humans, plus she offers you a way to place a Human from the top five cards of your library into your hand, giving you some protection from board sweepers.

Calix Enchantments

The next deck I have for you features Calix, a planeswalker from Theros that lost his spark. Let's take a look at the deck.

Calix, Guided by Fate
Calix, Guided by Fate provides a +1/+1 counter for one of your creatures whenever it or another enchantment enters the battlefield under your control. He also has an ability that will create a token that's a copy of a nonlegendary enchantment you control whenever Calix or an enchanted creature you control deals combat damage to your opponent. Hallowed Haunting is a great choice for this ability, as you'll soon have the seven enchantments needed for Hallowed Haunting to be able to create Spirit creature tokens en masse.

Heliod, the Radiant Dawn // Heliod, the Warped Eclipse allows you to return an enchantment card from your graveyard to your hand when he enters the battlefield. This can be a great way to return Jukai Naturalist, who is sure to be a target of your opponent's removal. When you transform into Heliod, the Warped Eclipse, you'll be able to cast all spells as though they had flash, and with a mana discount as well. This will provide you with a huge advantage over your opponent, as you will be able to create tokens after your opponent has declared their attackers.

Selesnya Toxic

The final deck I have for you features a fun alternative way to win. Let's take a look at it.

Venerated Rotpriest
Since every creature in this deck has toxic, you'll have a good chance of killing your opponent with poison counters. You'll want to cast Venerated Rotpriest as quickly as possible, as it will provide protection for all of your creatures. If your opponent targets any of your creatures with a removal spell, they will gain a poison counter. You can use this ability to your benefit, as well, by targeting Venerated Rotpriest with spells like Tyvar's Stand and Infectious Bite. This will also result in your opponent getting a poison counter.

Infectious Bite is a great removal spell for this deck. It allows you to deal damage to an opponent's creature equal to the power of one of your creatures. You can cast this spell after attackers have been declared, allowing you to get the +1/+1 bonus provided by Slaughter Singer. You can also cast Tyvar's Stand in conjunction with Infectious Bite, pouring extra mana into Tyvar's Stand to allow you to destroy a sizable opposing creature. Or save some mana and cast this spell after your opponent has declared a blocker. You'll only have to raise your power up to one-half of that blocking creature's toughness to destroy them when both Tyvar's Stand and Infectious Bite are being cast.

Wrapping Up

While Selesnya decks usually feature such themes as token creation or buffing your creatures, these decks show that there can be even more possibilities. Whether you want to play a typical deck or go off the beaten path, you're likely to find a Selesnya deck that's right for you.

What do you think of these decks? Feel free to share this article with your friends anywhere on social media. And be sure to join me here again next week as I continue my search for innovative decks in Standard. I'll see you then!
