Standard Decks for After Rotation

Reddit

Hello everyone. Last week, I brought you some decks you could play until Standard rotation happens. This week I have for you a few decks you'll be able to play using cards from our current sets that you'll be able to play the first couple of weeks after rotation. These will be good choices to play during the time between when Innistrad: Midnight Hunt releases and when you finally have enough cards from this set to build whatever deck you want to play. Let's get started with our first deck.

2022 Temur Ramp

We'll start this week with a Temur deck that wants to get a lot of mana for some pretty powerful spells. Let's take a look at the deck.

Prosperous Innkeeper
In the early stages of the game, you'll want to focus on ramping your mana and staying alive. You can do both with some of the creatures in this deck. Prosperous Innkeeper will provide you with a Treasure token when it enters play. It will also add one point of health to your life total whenever another creature enters the battlefield under your control. Prosperous Innkeeper is, perhaps, your most valuable early creature, so try to protect it as long as possible. Neverwinter Dryad can be used as a blocker so that you won't take damage from the creature she's blocking, and you'll still be able to sacrifice her to search your library for a Forest to put into play. Finally, Quandrix Cultivator searches out either a Forest or Island to put into play untapped when it enters the battlefield.

Once you've acquired enough mana, through a combination of extra lands or Treasure tokens, you can begin casting your finishers. Iymrith, Desert Doom is both a great deterrent and a great threat. While it is untapped, Iymrith has ward 4, making it difficult to remove. It's also a 5/5 flying creature, so it's quite capable of blocking most of your opponent's creatures. Once you're able to attack with Iymrith, if you deal combat damage to your opponent, you'll begin drawing additional cards, giving you access to other finishers.

Koma, Cosmos Serpent is possibly the best finisher this deck has. It cannot be countered, so your opponent will need to have some sort of removal to deal with it. At the beginning of each player's upkeep, you'll create a 3/3 Koma's Coil creature token, which you can use to provide indestructibility to Koma, Cosmos Serpent at any time. You can also sacrifice Serpents to tap your opponent's permanents and keep those permanents from being able to use their activated abilities this turn. Both of these abilities can allow you to attack with Koma without fear.

2022 Izzet Flamepainter Ramp

Next, I have another ramp deck that can win games unexpectedly. Let's take a look at it.

Efreet Flamepainter
While the previous deck ramped up its potential mana with a combination of extra lands and Treasure tokens, this deck relies only on creating Treasure tokens for additional mana. One of the best creatures at creating Treasure tokens is Goldspan Dragon. Not only do you create a Treasure token when it attacks, but also whenever Goldspan Dragon is targeted by a spell. Plus, with a Goldspan Dragon on the battlefield, all of your Treasure tokens will provide two mana of any one color when they are used.

You can use all of this extra mana to power up Crackle with Power. This sorcery costs xxx plus two Red mana, and it will deal five times the value of X to up to X number of targets. Let's assume you have five mana to use and you cast Crackle with Power with it. You'll be able to deal 5 damage to any single target. If you have eight mana to use, you'll deal 10 damage to two different targets. As you can see, this spell scales incredibly, and can make it so you're able to instantly wipe out your opponent's life total.

Efreet Flamepainter plays an important role in this deck. When it deals combat damage to a player, you can cast an instant or sorcery card from your graveyard for free. Since Efreet Flamepainter has double strike, you can find yourself in situations where you're able to cast two spells with this ability. Use this to destroy an opponent's creatures with Frost Bite, or draw additional cards with Expressive Iteration. Create additional Treasure tokens with Prismari Command, or go big and cast Magma Opus, giving you the upper hand. Alternatively, if you've discarded it earlier in the game, perhaps with Prismari Command, cast Alrund's Epiphany for free and take an extra turn. Whatever you choose, getting something for free can help you end games in a hurry.

2022 Mardu Clerics

The final deck I have for you this week checks off a lot of boxes for me. It gains life, has a lot of flying creatures, and has a lot of synergy. Let's check it out.

Righteous Valkyrie
Righteous Valkyrie pairs up nicely with Valkyrie Harbinger in this deck. With Righteous Valkyrie in play, if you play Valkyrie Harbinger, you'll gain five points of life. Then, at the beginning of your end step, you'll be able to create a 4/4 Angel creature token with flying and lifelink, which will trigger Righteous Valkyrie again and you'll gain four more points of life. That nine points of life can go a long way in your fight for victory.

This deck also features a full playset of Orah, Skyclave Hierophant. Orah also works well with Righteous Valkyrie, as he can provide a steady stream of Clerics from your graveyard to the battlefield. In this deck, you won't mind having your creatures go to the graveyard, as there are numerous ways to return them to the battlefield. If you find yourself with an abundance of Clerics in the graveyard, Haunting Voyage can be foretold to return all of them to the battlefield at once. This can allow you to gain a lot of life with Righteous Valkyrie.

Another way to get a creature back from the graveyard is with Thwart the Grave. You'll be able to return a minimum of two creatures back to the battlefield with this spell, depending on your party count. If you return Returned Pastcaller, it will be worthwhile to use its ability to put another copy of Thwart the Grave from your discard pile into your hand. These two cards play very nicely with each other and can allow you nearly infinite recursion. With this combination, it will be difficult for your opponent to sneak an attack in, since you'll always have a pair of chump blockers at the ready.

Wrapping Up

Now that the truncated preview season for Innistrad: Midnight Hunt is over, people can begin brewing new decks with this upcoming set. While I'm anxious to start that brewing process, I like that there are decks like the ones I've brought you today that are still very innovative, even with a smaller card pool.

What do you think of these decks? Do you have any suggestions for improvements? Let me know by leaving a comment below. Also, feel free to share this article with your friends anywhere on social media. And be sure to join me here again next week as I continue my search for innovative decks in Standard. I'll see you then!
