Darkness is falling on Standard. A week after Pro Tour Battle for Zendikar, Grand Prix Quebec City gave players a chance to react to the new face of the format. Just over 800 players came to try and take home the trophy, but the Top 8 was the story of one deck.
Dark Jeskai was the deck of the day. Fully half of the Top 8 was running a version of the deck that put both Owen Turtenwald and Jon Finkel on the Sunday stage a week ago. Their teammate, Reid Duke, dominated the Swiss with his Esper Control deck, but fell in the quarterfinals to eventual champion Dan Lanthier. The Top 8 also included Pascal Maynard and Oliver Polak-Rottmann. In the end though, darkness reigned supreme as Lanthier's take on Dark Jeskai defeated Omar Beldon, with the same archetype, in two quick games.
Congratulations and happy birthday to Dan Lanthier, your Grand Prix Quebec City champion!
