Immanuel Gerschenson Cruises to Victory at Grand Prix Madrid 2014

Reddit

Grand Prix Madrid has come and gone. Khans of Tarkir is making its presence felt in Modern with both the the finalists running decks fueled with powerful Delve spells. Immanuel Gerschenson updated Temur Delver with Treasure Cruise to power out an army of Young Pyromancer elemental tokens. Gerschenson's deck applies pressure early with Delver of Secrets and late thanks to Tarmogoyf. Temur Delver looks to be a deck to watch for the future of Modern.

Facing off against Gerschenson's tempo deck was another Temur deck, but this one had a leaned decidedly towards combo. Till Riffert decided to go hunting for Mountains in his Scapeshift deck. The deck has seen a resurgence recently thanks to Dig Through Time making the process of finding the pieces that much easier.

For those of you looking to try something new in Modern the final rounds provided some interesting takes. Ricardo van den Bogaard created a buzz with his innovative take on Scapeshift combo. The semi-finalist cut the blue to make space of a package of Summoning Trap and Through the Breach. Using these cards, Ricardo was able to cheat out Emrakul, the Aeons Torn or Primeval Titan, the latter helping to enable a kill with Valakut.

Falling to Ricardo in the quarterfinals was Stefan van de Veen and his Martyr of Sands combo. The deck looks to gain an arbitrarily large amount of life with the eponymous creature and a Proclamation of Rebirth. Once a life total is high enough winning is achieved through Serra Ascendant beatdown. Of course, facing down an Emrakul helps to make a life total matter far less.
