If you watch VH1 and crappy TV you'll see a new Apprentice style reality tv show, "I Want to Work for Diddy." This one features some crazy people pushing themselves to their limits to work for Sean "P. Diddy" Combs, a mogul in both music and fashion.
P. Diddy is an amazing story. He rose from nothing to become a multi-million dollar mogul. His is a story of hard work, perseverence and a refusal to give up. He worked harder and longer than his competition and he got ahead. Here is what you can learn from three quotes from 'Diddy'.
"Can't Stop. Won't Stop."
He worked as hard as possible. As a kid his mom worked three jobs after his dad died and left them struggling. He grew up watching his mom sacrifice and work to get ahead. That's what he does. He works days on end without sleep. While his competitors work 9-5 he's going 24/7/365 and the extra time puts him at an inherent advantage.
Can everyone do that? Of course not. Normal people burn out. They get bored after doing it for too long.
To be great though you have to be able to do this. You have to have the drive to push onward and play more and more Magic. The great players play Magic for hours every day of the week. Now you don't have to play Magic endlessly to play better, but you do have to play regularly and at a competitive level. Two hours of competitive, no forgiveness play is worth 2 months of casual play with your buddies.
"If you can't see the forest for the trees. You need to chop those F*ing trees down."
As Magic players in the game we exist in a world of opportunities. Our game is played off the top of a deck and as such we forecast. We try to make plans, we go into drafts with our plans and our plans can either help us or sound our death knell.
I played against Lee last night, I knew what I needed to win the game. I didn't draw it and so I assumed I had lost. I didn't look at my options and sure enough had I looked more closely I would have seen that I had drawn a winning card, just not the winning card I wanted.
You can't let yourself be blinded. If you have a plan you have to be willing to let it go.
"It's okay to be crazy, but don't be insane."
Einstein defined insanity as doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results. You must understand this in Magic. If you keep drafting Green/Blue and losing quickly then you need to change your plan. If you playtest an opponent with a deck, and after losing you keep insisting on playing one more game in the hopes of winning. That is insane. Sure you may win one eventually but are you really going to play the deck without changing it?
That would be insane.
You can be crazy. Crazy like a fox is even better. Diddy lives this, no one thought he could break into the urban and boutique fashion but he has and is now one of the top designers out there. His brand Sean John is well respected by critics and let's just say that it's a profitable company.
P. Diddy doesn't play Magic. He's too busy making money hand over fist. But if he did, he'd be following his own wisdom and undoubtedly be among the top in the game.
