As with the release of every Magic set, new mechanics are released and questions almost always arise. Wizards is great at evolving Magic and always giving us new and improved mechanics that keep the game interesting. With the recent news about Innistrad, we see that they again have proven that they aim to please.
At PAX 2011, Wizards announced that there will be three new mechanics, one reprint of a mechanic, and a new keyword added to the set. These include double-faced cards, Morbid, Curses, Flashback, and “Fight.” A few cards with each mechanic have been released, and with just one day into spoilers, we already have forty-one cards spoiled.
The major mechanic that I think has the Magic community up in arms is double-faced cards. Cards such as Gatsaf Shepherd and Ludevic’s Test Subject have been spoiled. These cards have a face both on the front and on the back of the card, and “transform” based on certain things happening.
The major questions about these cards are about how drafting and playing with these cards will work. Wizards has shown us that they will have placeholders with Magic backs to solve the problem of placing the cards in your deck, but the problem of drafting with a card with two faces is yet to be solved.
Now it is time for you, the GM readers, to let us know what you think about this mechanic. Here are some questions that you can all answer and discuss.
How will this affect drafting?
Will you be choosing to sleeve your cards or use the placeholder?
Do you think that this ability could have been done as a flip effect instead (e.g., Jushi Apprentice)?
How do you feel about the other mechanics?
