October 1-2-3 Big Apple Comic Con First In Series of $10K Events Leading to $75K Finals In Chicago 2011
“Magic: The Gathering” collectible gaming fans have another reason to attend Wizard World Comic Con events... well, actually 10,000 reasons! Starting at Big Apple Comic Con, October 1-3 at Penn Plaza Pavilion in New York, the TCGplayer.com Championship Series will host events at every Wizard World Comic Con, offering $10,000 prizes at each, culminating in a huge $75,000 championship tournament at Chicago Comic Con in 2011. In total, over $250,000.00 in cash and prizes will be paid out during the inaugural year of the TCGplayer.com Championship Series.
At each Wizard World convention, TCGplayer.com will host two main Magic event tournaments and many smaller events running throughout the weekend. Each main event will give out $5,000 in prizes and will consist of a Standard Tournament on Saturday and a Sealed Tournament on Sunday. Top players from each $5,000 tournament will earn invitations to play in the end of the year $75,000 TCGplayer.com Championship Tournament. Each Wizard World convention will also have a full schedule of Magic Side events on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, including $5K Trials, Booster Drafts, Sealed Deck, 2HG, EDH, Standard, Extended and Legacy tournaments. Collectors will also be able to buy and sell cards and accessories throughout the weekend from many of the vendors listed on TCGplayer.com’s Internet Store.
“I'm very excited about this partnership,” said tournament organizer and Magic Hall of Famer Rob Dougherty. “The Wizard World Conventions are fantastic locations to compete in the TCGplayer Championship Series and enjoy a full weekend of Magic competition. They will have sanctioned events for every level of player. For casual players there will be demos, drafts, two-headed giant, EDH and more. Competitive players will be able to play high level events all weekend, with the $5K trials on Friday and a major $5K event on both Saturday and Sunday. This all leads up to the $75,000 Championship, the biggest independent tournament in Magic's history. It's going to be awesome!”
All events will be DCI sanctioned. The 5K and 5K trials will be competitive rules enforcement level (REL), all other events will be standard REL. Free demos will be available for new players to learn the game and get a free deck.
The TCGplayer.com gaming area will be separate from the Wizard World Comic Con admission, so you don’t need a Wizard World badge to play in the Magic tournaments. Tournament entrants can purchase discounted convention tickets for $9.99. Convention attendees who play in a TCGplayer.com event will receive a promotional Magic card (while supplies last).
