Commander Classics No More

Reddit

Hello happy folks! Today I wanted to take a looksee at kitchen table cards that are no more! We are looking at things for this like multiplayer, Commander, Five Color, and tournaments in the era that moved to the kitchen table for a bit but no more.

Let's get started!

Portcullis

This 4-drop artifact say when one or more dorks arrive to the battlefield, if there were two or more other creatures on the battlefield, that creature gets exiled. Then this has a leaves play trigger to put all exiled dorks back! Note leaves play, not destroyed. So, there are a few key things you might have missed here. First, the creatures ETB first, so they'll trigger things like Soul Warden and the ETB of Ravenous Chupacabra. Then you can destroy this and get another slate of triggers. If multiple dorks ETB at the same time, you control the order they do so. This was played in Living Death decks where you filled your graveyard with goodies, and then killed everything in play and choose your best two things to remain in play. From Aggro filling out the board fast and dropping this to stop others, there are loads of ways to make this work with your stuff. There are just 1634 registered in Commander decks over at EDHREC.com Since this is colorless and will fit anywhere, it's rare that so few would be played.

Equilibrium

This is the next card that was printed from the same block, a Mono-Blue 3-drop enchantment is next! Note this isn't on the Reserve List since it was reprinted in a later Core Set during Invasion block where I combined it with Standard legal flashing self-gater called Fleetfoot Panther in Selesnya colors that self-bounces those colors on arrival to the battlefield. Called "Equinaut" You can find it here. This would spend 1 mana to bounce a foe's dork ETB. Note that this is a cast trigger, not an ETB one, so you cannot bounce it what you cast back to your hand. You also cannot stop it by countering the spell. This is great with tempo and with flash to bounce your stuff after chumping, targeted or mass removal, and loads more. This is great, but there are just 5798 in Commander decks these days.

Silklash Spider

One of my favorite Spiders ever printed is this 5-drop 2/7 blocker body with reach in Green. You can sink mana in here to deal damage to flyers, with ?gg to start and then X damage is dealt. Note that it's activated, not tapped, so you can drop and use it then and there. Green sweepers are rare here. It's in a larger number of decks at 12762 since it has high toughness in that deck archetype and is a Spider for that tribe.

Whirlwind

From one flyer sweeper to another! This 4-drop Green sorcery will destroy all flyers for Wrath of God mana. Nice! Many decks have tons of great flyers you can kill, and some like Vampires, Demons, Dragons and Angels have most or all dorks flying. Since this is in Green, you can ignore this with your giant ground pounders. This used to get tons of play and was seen all over, but fewer today. It's in just fewer than 3k decks at EDHREC.com!

Rout

From one specific creature sweeper to one for everything, next is the best Wrath of God variant ever made for years. It was played in every White multiplayer deck for years. This five-mana sorcery costs one more than Wrath of God for the same sweeperage, but for two more mana you can instantly sweep the board. Saving yourself at instant speed when someone swung your way was way good. You could also do it EOT, and then cast your dorks on your turn to be the first to attack. This is the sweeper that could. Get it, run it, love it! It's currently in a solid 15428 decks. Not bad!

Commander Eesha

This awesome Command Zone candidate (just in 2231 decks in the 99) is 4-drop flying 2/4 body with protection from dorks, so it'll always survive damage from foes swinging it's way. It's also unblockable by all dorks, so that's a Voltron or Commander Damage win con, or just great in many places. It's also unkillable by dork removal like Ravenous Chupacabra or Flametongue Kavu. She used to dominate all of the tables at every home!

Fog Bank

Another flying blocker of anything, this time on a 0/2 2-drop Wall! This used to be so iconic in heavy kitchen table play and was even reprinted in early era Commander decks like Commander 2013 and then also Commander 2014, but never since. People might target Eesha since it's a better card with the ability to attack unblockably, but it's rare that targeted removal heads this uncommon defender's way. Today it's still in 23689 decks, about 1% of Blue decks, but I haven't seen one in years!

Lieutenant Kirtar

This 3-drop 2/2 flying Commander Eligible dork is next. You can spend 2 mana to sacrifice him to Exile an attacking critter. It doesn't have to be you, it can be your buddies getting attacked so you can play politics. This sacs, so it's recursive, but what it hits cannot be. When you have this out with the mana, no one swings at you with one giant dork. Even two would get one blocked and the other one destroyed. Please note that like SIlklash Spider this doesn't tap so it can be used on arrival to the battlefield or after swinging. He used to be so dominant, but today he's in barely more than 2k decks. I have built a Commander deck around him as White's Greatest Multiplayer hits. Since you can sac him recursively since White is the secondary color of ramp after Green and he's cheap. I love this good dork. How about you?

Draining Whelk

Now let's turn to one of my favorite counterspell cards that's ever been printed, this take on Mystic Snake. Like the Snake, this is a flashable body leaving counter that, when timed right can save you from a lethal attack, this is better since it's just Blue, it rocks the evasive flying, and then enters with size equal to one plus the cost of what was countered. It's in around 6k decks over at EDHREC.com. I love this way much as a potential win-con counter, but there are times when you counter a Swords to Plowshares or Pongify and only have an overcosted 2/2. Enjoy the flying beats here nicely!!!

Desertion

Let's turn to another Commander popular Counterspell that reprinted in Commander's Arsenal and Conspiracy: Take the Throne - both multiplayer themed casual sets, one in draft. This costs one fewer than the Whelk above, and then if you countered an artifact or dork? You steal it into play right now! Note that this is NOT cast, so your foe won't get a chance to counter what you are stealing later. Also, note you can counter anything like a spell like Time Stretch, you'll only get the good stuff if you counter the two permanents types listed above. It's in just 11054 decks!

Kor Haven

Now let's turn to lands with this next one. This Maze of Ith variant taps for colorless mana, can be tapped with two to prevent all damage from a single attacker to anyone, both better than Maze of Ith, since this taps for mana and doesn't untap the dork, and worse since it's in White and taps for mana to use the key ability. The Maze is in a strong 116k decks and 3% of White decks to Kor Haven's 21280 and 1% of White decks.

Mindslaver

Another colorless artifact big in tournament gaming like Standard as well as kitchen table play. When this debuted, it was a surprising, cool and unique take on stealing your opponents turn! With this 6-drop, four to tap and sac, you can have one foe attack another to kill him or cast a removal spell on their own things. If they had out a sac engine like Goblin Bombardment or Viscera Seer this can destroy their battlefield and was often seen as a bit of a win-con. It's pretty strong, and recursive with things like Goblin Welder or Academy Ruins.

Memory Jar

Another sac and then get good stuff artifact, this was emergency banned in Standard! It's just in 14k decks, wowsers. That's horrible since it's so good and colorless too. This 5-drop tap for no mana to sac will have everyone exile their hand, draw a new hand of 7, and then you can cast them just this turn. Then you'll discard and return your exiled hand. Since everyone else has a one turn window they only can cast things with flash or instants but you can drop lands, permanents, sorceries, the world is your oyster. This was heavily played in Five Color, casual, tournaments and more, as well as Commander, but not much these days!!!

Helm of Kaldra
Sword of Kaldra
Shield of Kaldra

These three pieces are next! These are designed for the more casual side of the game. The Helm (4589 decks) costs three, equips with two to give haste, first strike and trample. The Sword (6622 decks) costs four, equips for four too, and then grows it in size by a massive +5/+5! Then it also has a combat damage trigger to exile what it dealt damage too. The Shield (5492 decks) has a four cost and equips, gives it indestructible, and then it and the other pieces also have indestructible to remove much interaction of a destruction nature. They were iconic at kitchen table formats when debuted, and some might still run Shield here and there but not many.

Darksteel Ingot

You might disagree with this one a bit. But that's okay, it's my list. Darksteel Ingot used to be the default Manalith people would run after Sol Ring and it was mana rock in the tops of that list. It was the first 3-drop, tap for one mana of any color that was made, iconic for Five Color, Commander and other brews! Now it's still in the top 50 at 38th spot so you might think that matters, but I disagree since that indestructible to keep it from being accidentally swept up in mass removal means you should always have it. Get it, run it, love it, and bring its numbers up again!

And there we go! What are some forgotten Commander Classics I didn't think of? Give these a try and see what folks say!
