Hello awesome folks! Today I wanted to look at 5 great support options for your next Aristocrats brews in Commander! Here we'll be looking at triggers and sacrifice stuff! Ready for my list? Let's do it to it!
Honorable Mention #1. - Victimize
Let's start with a three cost sorcery reanimation spell! This will bring back two dorks for just one spell, tapped though. But you'll have to sac one of your guys, so you are netting one dork overall and getting one slate of death triggers and recurring two win cons or triggers that died since most are on creature form! I love this cheap sorcery loads.
Honorable Mention #2 - Card Draws
Next are all of the card draw stuff. Drawing cards is amazingly awesome to find your combo or win con or answers to removal. This started on my list as triggers like Harvester of Souls or Grim Haruspex. Nasty stuff! Then I tossed in sac engines that turn a dead card into a card drawn, like the one-drop enchantment above for two mana or Carnage Altar in artifact form. Then the instants that sacrifice a dork to draw two cards are next, like the first one in Village Rites or many others. Love digging here loads!
#5. Mana-Free Sac Engines
First let's look at mana free sac engines, unlike Vampiric Rites above. Some of these are actual proper win cons like two-drop uncommon Goblin Bombardment tinging someone or thing, but Red isn't commonly played in this color so sometimes they'll run Blasting Station instead which is more limited. Then the super mega popular one-drop 1/1 will turn free sacs into scries! Sure, it's not card draw like above, but free deck manipulation is great here. You can also make a win-con by pumping the one-drop 1/1 Feeder permanently but this is a going big red zone win easily answered.
#4. Self-Sacrificial Stuff that Self-Recurs
Next are the rarely played self-sacrificial stuff that self recurs. The best here is the Skeleton above that costs two for a two-drop 1/1 to recur for two mana any time. Note it's in just 38% of Aristocrat brews, no clue why it's that low since you can easily make the two recasting mana from higher hitting stuff and then set up an infinite loop. I also love here the landfall recursive Vampire Spirit that also recurs but isn't on the page so I guess folks are hoping to make one cast 2/1 Zombie above to recur if you control a Zombie already. Like Bloodghast it's not on the list either...weird right?
#3. Mana Making Death Triggers
Next are the aforementioned death triggers that make that mana, all on Black dorks that cost three or four mana. The best is the first. It's got a blocky body with 1/4 and then turns dead dorks into Treasures. Nice! The second one costs three for a 2/2 and then has a death trigger to make a 0/1 Eldrazi dork that sacs for colorless mana. The third is a four drop on curve 4/3 with devoid has a death trigger to make a 1/1 that sacs for that mana. Love this pair loads!
#2. Win Con Death Triggers
These are what the Aristocrats decks are built around, death triggers that kill opposing players, so why aren't they #1? You'll see! These are many, and the first commonly played one in Commander was the two-drop 0/1 that death triggers any dork into one life drained from one foe. This only works on one targeted foe, not all of them, and then any dork, not just yours. The next 1/1 two-drop uncommon turns your deaths into drains of all foes and its abilities are much more common with how this deep slate works. We also have the sacrificial death trigger for the Rakdos three-drop 3/3 with anything not just dorks triggering, opposing stuff too, for a ping to any target to kill anything. I love giving this deathtouch with Basilisk Collar. Great trio of fun times commencing!
#1. Mana Making Sac Engines
Our final spot are the mana making sac engines - these three! They began in the second expansion set ever with the Altar of Ashnod to make that double colorless mana for ramping. It's the only one to make two mana, but it's the harder to use colorless. Next printed was the rare three drop in Invasion the Altar of Phyrexia! This will turn sacs into just one mana but of any color! Then a few sets ago this Modern legal mono-Black three-drop 3/3 will trade one life for a sacrifice into a Treasure to save that ramping or double. It's both the best since Treasures are superior to ramp right now and double able with Doubling Season and the worst since it's an answerable dork and in black so harder to play in Commander due to color identity. Love the mana making here!
And those are my choices for the Top Aristocrat Support cards! What are yours?
