Since I heard the gist of what Momir Basic was years ago, I’ve loved the format. Sure, there’s a lot of luck involved, but it’s fun and nostalgic, and it doesn’t cost much to invest in.
I explain it in the videos, but for those of you who just can’t wait (I am very impatient so trust me, I relate), the format goes like this: Both players have a sixty-card deck comprised of just basic lands and a Momir Vig avatar, pictured here:
Since both players are just creating a random creature with mana cost X every turn, the format only works on Magic Online. Brandon Large goes into it in his great article, found here, but the gist of it is that you can buy a Momir avatar for around nine tickets (that’s the Magic Online currency) and then just grind value off Momir Basic Daily Events until you can buy into real Constructed formats, such as Modern or Standard.
What I wanted to do with these videos is show you what a Momir Basic Daily Event looks like and to showcase some other strategies that Brandon may not have touched on. The format is an exciting one to me, and it happens to be very diverse and skill-testing.
