Duskmourn Previews Kick Off

Meathook Massacre II
Haunted Screen
Leyline of Transformation

Last Saturday saw the official start of previews for Duskmourn: House of Horrors with the debut reveal happening at Pax West. As such, we've seen a whole host of awesome new cards and designs. You can look at all the spooky fun for yourself by checking out the official Card Image Gallery on the mothership, or else check out the CoolStuffInc.com Duskmourn page right here. If you're looking for my usual week one preview recap, it's been a little delayed due to travel and you can expect to see it early next week instead.

A cEDH Rules Committee Forms and Comes Under Fire

For several years now, there has been a lot of consternation aimed at cEDH and whether or not it should be treated as a format separate from casual Commander. This week saw the first steps to try and officialize this, with popular cEDH tournament organizer TopDeck.gg announcing a cEDH Rules Committee and showcasing the people involved. This announcement alone garnered a lot of scrutiny and questions from the community, many of whom felt this was a bit out of the blue and that the names weren't very recognizable.

Further concerns came up due to a lack of representation of women and nonbinary players. Claims the decision to put the chosen set of people in charge was based on meritocracy caused a lot of digging into the committee members, as many felt they were relatively unknown comparatively. This exploration found that some people involved were extremely problematic individuals and has caused further discussions, statements, and more, leading to an ongoing issue that has yet to fully resolve. Time will tell if things finally settle down, but for the time being, this is a notable start to a possible officialization of cEDH as a format of its own.

The MTG ELO Project Reveals an Updated Site

If you've been around for a long while in the competitive Magic scene, you might know all about ELO. This ranking system used to be a barometer to help gauge who the best players in the game were once upon a time. You can even find it on Magic Online to this day, as it was hard programmed into the client when it first began in 2002, though it's now private and only something you personally can look at.

While Wizards discontinued this method for exploring competitive rankings several years ago, Adam and Rebecca of the MTG ELO Project have been keeping the tradition alive. Now after a lengthy hiatus from updates, the MTG ELO Project 2.0 has officially launched, adding in several major events that took place during the pandemic as well as historical major events such as the SCG Tour events. If you'd like to check it out for yourself, you can find it here. Type in your name and see how you rank! (I'm currently 1604 myself!)

Decklist of the Week

With the big swath of bans affecting multiple formats last week, players everywhere have been trying to find the new best things in all formats. Both Modern and Pioneer are getting a ton of attention, and this week I want to talk about some of the latest hotness with the latter. During Bloomburrow previews, Ygra, Eater of All was noted to create an infinite loop with two copies of Cauldron Familiar. Now that Rakdos Vampires and Amalia Combo are out of the picture, a new iteration of Rakdos Sacrifice has popped up that splashes Green to run the Ygra combo. If you're looking for something new and exciting to play in the fresh format, I definitely recommend checking this one out!
