This Week in Lorcana: Friday, December 13th

Reddit

Greetings, Illumineers! I hope you all are having a fantastic week so far. Today, we're going to recap on the EU Continental Championship results and touch base on not one, but TWO huge reveals for Disney Lorcana. Strap in, because it's going to be a wild ride!

EU Continental Championships Winner - Domingo Martinez Rodenas

Marking a significant milestone in the history of Lorcana, we have our first ever Continental Champion crowned in the EU, and that's none other than Domingo Martinez Rodenas. Domingo ran the ever-popular Ruby Amethyst and piloted his way to the finals through an LCQ entry, which is completely wild on its own! Having secured a spot in both the AM and PM pods, Domingo ended up qualifying in the PM slot with a 5-0 run, compared to his round one loss in the AM slot. As demoralizing as that can be, it shows that with the right headspace and feedback, that anyone can bounce back. Let's take a look into his winning decklist for the main event.

Initial Thoughts

Taking a glance at the list, some of the impressive highlights to consider were the early and mid-game choice for Domingo. A Flynn Rider - Frenemy + Sisu - Emboldened Warrior start puts a lot of pressure on a lot of top tier decks in the format. For Ruby/Sapphire, they're not typically getting answers for this until they're at 3 ink and on. Forcing them to play a Brawl on Flynn Rider - Frenemy is a huge attack on their tempo since they've most likely ramped to 4 ink and were looking to play either a Hiram Flaversham - Toymaker or Gramma Tala - Keeper of Ancient Stories. For Amethyst/Emerald, they're answer could be a well placed Madam Mim - Fox, but bouncing and trading into a Sisu - Emboldened Warrior can be a huge tempo loss without a strong follow up. For Amber/Steel, singers are typically very weak on Strength, so without direct removal, it can put those players in a bad spot.

I'm particularly interested in how Domingo chose to navigate on how to be offensive and defensive with his Genie - Wish Fulfilled, Belle - Accomplished Mystic, and Elsa - The Fifth Spirit. Typically, in these battles of attrition, those who can keep their Genies alive end up winning. This means that Elsa - The Fifth Spirit following up a Genie - Wish Fulfilled play can take an opposing Genie - Wish Fulfilled out by forcing the exert and sending your own Elsa and Genie to efficiently challenge the opposing Genie. Without a solid response, a follow up Belle - Accomplished Mystic can keep your Genie pretty topped on on Willpower, sending the damage to an opposing character (even another Genie!) and then sending Elsa to take that one out as well. These plays are particularly very strategic, so proper planning is a must.

The choice to include Lady Tremaine - Imperious Queen alongside Madame Medusa - The Boss makes sense due to avoiding not being able to target opposing characters due to Ward. This makes some of the Emerald/X matchups a bit more tolerable, and she can quest for two lore to boot, helping you close out the game a bit faster.

Overall, Domingo clearly made a fine choice and we look forward to seeing him and the rest of the top 8 for Disney Lorcana World Championships, located at Disney World in Orlando, Florida in a future date!

New Sets Announced!

Yes, you've read that correctly. Not one, but TWO Disney Lorcana sets have been announced for 2025 already. These were announced during the EU Continental Championships:

Archazia's Island - March 2025

Now, I can't be the only one reading into "Learn new tricks!", right? This could be our first hint toward a new mechanic or two that Lorcana desperately needs right now, since our last one was Sing-Together, introduced in Ursula's Return. There's been some flavor text alluding to an owl in the latest set, Azurite Sea, but this seems to be confirmation that the owl could be a force of good, rather than evil. We can't steal the spotlight from this set's block main villain...

Reign of Jafar - Q2 2025

Reign of Jafar was also announced, following a similar pattern to the previous block, where Ursula was the main villain for her block. Jafar seems to have obtained both pieces of the Hexwell Crown and is clearly up to no good. Not much has been mentioned about this set, but be sure to stay tuned in here for updates as they come in!
