Greetings, Illumineers! This week, we'll wrap up the year with some great topics on Disney Lorcana. We'll touch on topics such as the collectability of Disney Lorcana, as well as a quick look at the top deck list from a 56 player event that happened in Germany. Without further ado, let's jump right in.
Does Disney Lorcana Lack Collectability?
Illumineers on X and Reddit both express concerns about the collectability of Lorcana. Beyond the Enchanted rarity cards, there really isn't much to chase when it comes to traditional booster packs. Ravensburger has been keeping more exclusive cards purchasable in collection boxes which tends to sell out immediately and immediately listed on on marketplaces for almost triple the price:
Now, can one argue this a supply and demand issue, or is Ravensburger missing an opportunity to include additional collectable rarities in booster packs? Let's take a look at some other established TCGs and see how they approach this:
Magic: The Gathering
Collector Boosters
Collector Boosters are a product that Wizards of the Coast created that increases the price a bit, but the experience is far more exciting. Here's the breakdown of the contents:
- 5 Rare or Mythic Rare cards
- 4 Uncommon cards
- 5 Common cards
- 1 Land
- 1 Double-sided token
Of that, there's also the following chances:
- 12-13 cards are cold foils
- 6 cards have a different card frame
- 3% of boosters have an exclusive treatment unique to it's set
This experience would translate well into Disney Lorcana, seeing that a large demographic of the player base are collectors as well. We've seen some established players on Disney Lorcana Challenge streams with max rarity decks so I could see a product similar to this working out well.
Pokemon
The Pokemon rarity range presents a unique problem where there feels like there's too much to try and chase, or the fact that you typically only want to go for the top end. It's really hard to map those rarities with what we have, but I'll take some examples that feel like they would fit right in:
Borderless frame/Illustrator Art Cards
Disney Lorcana has some of the most impressive illustrations, and why not grant the ability for the illustrators to maximize that experience with playable cards? Some extended art work has been left to the imagination of alter artists, and it's a prime example of why something like this that could be officially produced could work:
Essentially, Ravensburger might want to look into this missed opportunity to provide some added value to the game instead of feeling bad for cracking packs for just one subset of cards.
Andreas Hamann takes 1st at Playing Ducks Home Masters 3
Okay I'll admit I may be a bit biased here, but I absolutely love covering events where my favorite deck type takes first, and that's Steelsong. The fact that there are many variations that perform so well make it that Ruby/Sapphire isn't such a painful matchup anymore. Given that a large part of the EU Continentals was Ruby/Sapphire, I'm interested in seeing how the ratios play out this time for the US Continentals. Regardless, let's take a look at the list:
Amber/Steel | Andreas Hamann , 1st Place Playing Ducks Home Masters 3
- Characters (44)
- 1 Cinderella - Stouthearted
- 1 Lawrence - Jealous Manservant
- 2 Pluto - Guard Dog
- 2 Prince Naveen - Ukulele Player
- 2 Simba - Pride Protector
- 3 Lilo - Escape Artist
- 3 Pete - Games Referee
- 3 Simba - Future King
- 3 Ursula - Vanessa
- 4 Ariel - Spectacular Singer
- 4 Cinderella - Ballroom Sensation
- 4 Mr. Smee - Bumbling Mate
- 4 Rapunzel - Gifted with Healing
- 4 Robin Hood - Beloved Outlaw
- 4 Robin Hood - Champion of Sherwood
Andreas played against Emerald Steel in the finals and I can understand a bit why they might've had the edge in this match, despite a 47% win rate indication on the win rate matrix (at the time of this article), provided by Ink Decks. Some of the more impactful cards in the matchup are Lilo - Escape Artist which welcomes discard effects. There are enough targeted damage songs that can keep problematic characters like Diablo - Devoted Herald at bay. Cinderella - Stouthearted is the perfect answer for characters with Ward that refuse to exert. What I like here is the one of Grab Your Sword, which can be absolutely backbreaking against a board of Diablo and Prince John without the support of a Hidden Cove. Congratulations Andreas on your win!
Until Next Year
