After last week's storm of Tweets regarding everything from a new set to the rise in Legacy prices, we find ourselves in the calm this week. There is still plenty to cover this week, most notably the arrival of the first spoilers of the season, and with them a flurry of opinions and interactions to be stated.
As of Wednesday, April 6, 2011, we had a total of twenty-three cards spoiled. While we covered the new Praetor last week with little excitement for playability, this week's batch appears much more promising. The first card on the chopping block is Phyrexian Unlife.
This card does seem like it may find a home; 10 life for 3 seems fine, and it does prevent Tendrils in Legacy due to current wording, though this may change if translations are found to be slightly off.
Puresteel Paladin is next on the chopping block. This guy may already have a home in W/X Quest decks and may even spawn an archetype of his own. Certainly on the list of potential playables from the set spoiled thus far.
Hex Parasite . . . Is this the answer to Planeswalkers we have been seeking? Unlike answers before, he has two huge boons going for him. He is reusable, so removing that counter from Everflowing Chalice no longer costs you a card. And probably the biggest boon is the fact that he costs 1 and is playable in every color. Giving decks answers to a multitude of cards from quests to Planeswalkers in addition to punching through some extra damage seems like a great addition to the metagame.
Phyrexian Canceller is probably seeing the most hype besides the big tin man himself, and it may be well deserved. If mono-Black finds a suitable shell, it seems to have all the answers for the current format, and he is certainly a key piece to that puzzle.
Finally, the steel titan himself, the slayer of moggs (accidentally of course) . . . Karn, the Released! This card is a huge breakthrough on multiple levels of the game, and not only as the first colorless Planeswalker.
I have been seeing a lot of buzz on the big man as a possible finisher in ramp-style decks, which before lacked any forms of true removal. Only time will tell if he earns his presale price, but for now, he seems to be the major draw for the set.
Before I move on, I would just like to comment on the new "Phyrexian" mana. This concept is a great idea that makes total sense and is a welcome mechanic to this set. Time will tell if Wizards takes this opportunity to produce a FOW-style card, but this seems like the ideal mechanic to do so.
: Counter target spell.
As an alternate cost, , remove a blue card from your hand: Counter target spell.
Seems like a great alternative to Force. If you have up, you may choose to lose no life, which is better in some situations than FOW, and in others the cost of 2 life makes it conditionally worse at times.
Other comments I have seen debate the plausibility of a / creature, more than likely a 2/2 in either White or Green. Would this make decks like K-Red or other suicide aggro decks plausible? We can only speculate for now, but the concept seems sound.
Another hot topic this week has been the price of Jace, the Mind Sculptor in the future. People are unsure how to proceed; do you hold and hope for the best, or sell out now? A few Twitter followers had some things to say about the Planeswalker and his financial fate.
Another Twitter member brought up a valid point involving the possible rotation.
Though he may be correct, there is still heavy demand for Jace in the eternal formats, and as it stands, he is still the king of the 4CMC 'walker spot. It will be interesting to watch JTMS in the next few months as we approach the M12 spoiler season. He is sure to drop in value over that period of time, so if you have no direct attachment to him, it seems wise to sell now while the price tag is still near the Benjamin mark.
Another card still on the rise this week in the financial world is Force of Will; when last mentioned in this article, he was hitting the $75 mark at most sites. Earlier this week, its price took another jump, now reaching $90 on the major sites with eBay slowly creeping behind. Will this trend continue? Will we see a possible Force reprint in the future? These are questions still asked every day on Twitter.
With all this financial talk of late, ManaNation has released a poll on the home page asking for opinions of the current Legacy format and how it affects players.
I urge you to cast your vote, if you haven't already. The player's opinion is very important in all of this, and though it may not seem like your voice matters in the grand scheme of things, enough voices can. Wizards has created a game for the people and, in turn, needs the people to survive, so voice your opinion and let the vendors and Wizards know how you feel. Though I don't fear for the survival of Legacy, I think it is important to gauge how the masses view this current situation.
Well, that about wraps up Twitter this week. Not the most entertaining week, but the new spoilers are always welcome and the financial talk is great to keep in the know. Twitter can be one of the most useful allies when trying to gain information about #MTG, allowing insight in both humor and knowledge.
